Next Stage Design + Build is a company with a 20 year track record of excellence in delivering beautiful and functional designs, high quality construction and top level client satisfaction to our upscale homeowner clients in the Silicon Valley region of the South Francisco Bay Area. As the company evolves into an employee-owned 30 person company and our founder phases out of the day-to-day operations, we are seeking a General Manager to be the Chief Operating Executive responsible for leading and directing the overall operation of the business in a manner that ensures profitable business growth. The General Manager is responsible for the direction, coordination, and evaluation of the key staff members and may temporarily supervise managers focused on specific operational projects. The responsibilities also include recruiting and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; coaching and rewarding employees; addressing their concerns and resolving problems in accordance with company policies and procedures. You will report to the founder and CEO of the company in this role.

KEY RESULTS / PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

  • Creation of a three-year vision for the business in alignment with ownership goals.
  • Annual business plan developed and communicated throughout the organization.
  • Annual marketing plan developed and executed.
  • Sales targets met both quarterly and annually.
  • Revenue produced vs. target or plan.
  • Gross Profit and Expense targets are managed and met.
  • Profit targets are met.
  • Guild Quality customer satisfaction scores exceeding targets.
  • Employee satisfaction meets or exceeds target.

STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONS PLANNING

  • Actively leads the strategic direction setting for the company as the leader of the executive management team. Key role in determining the need for alliances with outside organizations.
  • Lead the development of the operational strategy for the organization. Approves recommendations for staffing, equipment, and other resources to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Sets top level annual and three-year financial and operations performance measures for the company and facilitates the annual target setting process for the entire business.
  • Holds semi-monthly management meetings to review performance and set targets for the each quarter.

MARKETING STRATEGY AND PLANNING

  • Actively leads the marketing strategy for the company and determines the need for alliances, partnerships, and outsourcing of key marketing tactics including the overall marketing mix, the choice of web-services tools and resources, and advertising partners.
  • Plays an active role in the marketing plan as a visible spokesperson for the company including leading seminar and webinar presentations, participating in leadership forums and panels, and authoring articles in trade publications.

SALES AND DESIGN STRATEGY AND PLANNING

  • Leads the development and refinement of the sales strategy for business including the definition of the sales process, the roles and responsibilities of the resources involved in sales, design, and production.
  • Reviews and approves plans, estimates, proposals, agreements, and contracts for all fixed price projects.
  • Directly supervises the design and development manager and provides assistance to the project design staff with respect to ensure producible projects that meet schedule and budget constraints.

PRODUCTION STRATEGY AND OVERSIGHT

  • Ensure that the production team has the right strategy, structure, leadership, goals, oversight and support to meet its goals and responsibilities. Provides back-up for the production manager in critical situations.
  • Visit a sample of job-sites as needed during the course of the year to check on the progress, and to ensure quality work and proper flow of project.
  • Participate in post-project reviews of key projects to gain visibility to issues that impact schedule, quality, job profitability, and client satisfaction.
  • Ensure that the Production Manager/Project Managers has the resources and tools needed for meeting legal and company requirements for building code, job-site safety, and field employee job performance.
  • Responds to escalations or concerns from current or previous clients and facilitates a resolution that balances customer satisfaction with profit objectives.

ORGANIZATIONAL AND DEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT

  • Ensure that the operations and HR responsible manager has the right strategy, structure, leadership, goals, oversight and support to meet its goals and responsibilities in the areas of office, outsourced services, and vehicle management. Provides back-up for the Business Operations Manager in critical situations.
  • Actively support and facilitate the “open door” policy of the company to enable employees to bring concerns and issues forward without fear of reprisal.
  • Regularly schedule one-to-one meetings with employees at all levels to assess effectiveness of leadership and communication in the entire team.
  • Ensure that employee satisfaction surveys are implemented, analyzed, and communicated to assist the leadership team in identifying and solidifying areas of strength and potential improvement areas.
  • Promotes harmonious relations among clients, employees, trade partners, and suppliers by maintaining close communication.

FINANCIAL REPORTING LEADERSHIP AND SUPPORT

  • Ensure that the Accounting Manager has the right strategy, structure, leadership, goals, oversight, and support to meet its goals and responsibilities in financial planning and reporting.
  • Analyze monthly reports on marketing effectiveness, sales performance, gross-profit, warranty costs, and customer satisfaction.
  • Prepare and analyze a monthly business fundamentals report that tracks key metrics for the company to ensure business planning is on track.
  • Lead the weekly 60/60 meeting to review project progress reporting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Ten to fifteen years related experience in a production leadership, sales management, design management, operations management in a similar home improvement business is highly desired. Some years of experience may be substituted through formal training or experience in similar scope of responsibility in another industry or provided by an equivalent combination of education and experience.

A bachelor's degree in business, engineering, design or architecture is preferred but not required.
