The General Manager at Boris and Horton is the owner's right-hand person and a beloved face of our café to our guests (and their pups!). This role is all about bringing the café's fun, community-driven, and dog-loving vibe to life. From crafting a warm and welcoming environment for both humans and canines, to leading the team with a thoughtful, hands-on approach, this person will ensure that every aspect of the café runs like a well-oiled machine. This person will work closely with the owner, front-of-house, and back-of-house teams to ensure smooth operations, high standards, and exceptional guest experiences. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, detail-oriented leader with a passion for people and dogs, who thrives on organization and efficiency while fostering a welcoming atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Overall Operations: Oversee the café's daily operations, including managing P&L, handling administrative tasks, and ensuring everything runs smoothly.
  • Reports & Recommendations: Provide weekly cost reports to the owner with suggestions to improve efficiency, cut costs, and increase profitability.
  • Menu & Costs: Manage food, menu, and packaging costs while maintaining quality and fun.
  • Financial Oversight: Work with bookkeeping to track inventory, ensure record-keeping accuracy, and manage large sums of money.
  • Customer Experience: Set the tone for a warm, playful, and authentic guest experience, leading by example in service standards.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure the café meets all health and safety regulations to keep guests and their dogs safe.
  • Inventory Management: Order supplies, track inventory, and ensure readiness for high-volume periods.
  • Cost Control: Maintain food, labor, and controllable costs within the company's guidelines.
  • Customer Care: Address and resolve customer complaints with a solution-focused approach.
  • Brand Knowledge: Stay informed about the café's brand and menu to lead confidently and authentically.
  • People Management: Collaborate with the owner to ensure smooth onboarding, policy enforcement, and employee record management.
  • Team Supervision: Oversee both FOH and BOH staff to ensure productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Technology: Be proficient with the Toast/POS system, ensuring smooth transactions and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Quality Control: Oversee food and beverage preparation to ensure consistent execution of menu items and specials.
  • Additional Tasks: Take on special projects or challenges as needed to support the café's success.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as an Assistant General Manager or General Manager in the food service or hospitality industry.
  • NYC Food Protection certification required.
  • Experience leading teams in customer service or production environments.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Proficient in POS systems, with Toast experience a plus.
  • Strong ability to work in fast-paced environments and manage multiple tasks.
  • Accountability in cash handling and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and customer-service focus.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to great personal hygiene.

The General Manager will be integral in maintaining the heart of Boris and Horton—creating a fun, organized, and community-focused space where guests, dogs, and the team always feel at home.
