General Definition and Scope of Job The primary role of the General Surgery and Bariatrics Manager is to coordinate care for bariatric and general surgery patients. This includes supervising office staff, overseeing front desk activity for competent completion of clerical/clinical duties and assuring a positive, safe and productive experience for all patients. Management of ongoing Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) compliance, including program development, patient and staff education, as well as the oversight of multidisciplinary teams and acting as the liaison between the hospital and surgical practice. Job Status: Full TimeWhat are the Minimum Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements?
  • Active clinical license (Registered Nurse, Registered Dietitian, or Physician Assistant).
  • Experience in bariatrics (surgical weight loss program) and care of general surgery patients.
  • Approximately three to five years of clinical nursing experience, nursing management experience, or quality management, case management or discharge planning experience.
  • Experience in program development, insurance and marketing experience preferred in order to lead and direct an interdisciplinary work group.
  • Bachelors/Masters degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience or certification in Bariatric Specialty (CBN).
  • Knowledge of nursing theory and practice, as well as nursing and leadership skills.
  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills necessary in order to facilitate a multidisciplinary bariatric team, chair meetings, interview & evaluate others, and maintain excellent oral/written communication & organizational skills. Must be able to deal effectively with physicians and other health care team members when resolving problems/issues.
  • Ability to operate various office machines, computers, software packages, and patient therapeutic equipment and/or machines required.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail, deal effectively under emotionally and mentally stressful conditions with frequency when extremely sensitive/complex patient care, administrative, or employee based problems and situations arise.
  • Based on clinical specialty, has the knowledge, skills and abilities to make administrative and clinical decisions related to the assessments, treatment, and/or age-specific care of patients in the following age groups: adult, and geriatric patient. The individual will demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provide care.
What are the Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities?
  • Assists in administrative functions and the development and implementation of patient care protocols, clinical pathways and in updating patient policies and procedures for care of bariatric and general surgery patients.
  • Makes daily rounds on all bariatric surgery patients. Assesses and monitors the continuity of care and expedites and coordinates the delivery of services to facilitate a patient's progress throughout the continuum of care, from point of first interest, through the qualification period, the surgery process, post-op care, and post discharge to achieve desired quality outcomes.
  • Assumes a leadership role to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and review the plan of care and communicate findings effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintains outpatient records accurately, completely, timely and confidentially according to policies.
  • Facilitates patient and family education, and the discharge process to promote continuity of care after discharge and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Functions as a clinical liaison and resource for the hospital program.
  • Assists in the identification and reporting of quality issues, and in the development of a performance improvement plan for the Bariatric Surgery Program to assess and improve the quality and efficiency of the program including but not limited to quality assessment, utilization review, risk management, and infection control
  • Works in conjunction with and assists leadership and clinical nurse specialists in developing curriculum and providing skills labs or in-service education for Medical Staff, employees or contract staff regarding the special needs of bariatric patients. (Sensitivity training, lift & transfer techniques, complications of bariatric surgery, post-op care psychosocial needs, etc.)
  • Facilitates monthly bariatric surgical seminars and leads support group meetings, and keeps class advertising and calendar listings updated for the website and other advertising venues.
  • Conducts pre-operative patient education classes.
  • Exhibits behaviors and actions which create a high level of patient/customer satisfaction, which contributes to positive patient/customer relations and which reflect respect for the patient's/customer's rights, needs and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and human relation skills which promote harmony and teamwork.
  • Presents behavior and actions which maintain the hospital's credibility, integrity, and positive image.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the strategic objectives of the bariatric program.
  • Functions without direct supervision, utilizing time constructively and organizing assignments for maximum productivity.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety of patient/customers and ensures all patient care is provided in accordance with Hospital and other regulatory requirements to include: DNV, OSHA, State, Federal, Infection Control, Patients Safety Goals, etc.
  • Exhibits flexibility, adapting readily to changes in work environment or work schedule.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development by staying current in the field by reading related professional literature and undergoing annual bariatric related training.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of PHI (Personal Health Information) following HIPAA policy and government regulation. Maintains strict confidentiality of employee information.
  • Hires and orients new office staff, evaluates staff performance at introductory period and annually.
  • Handles finances and manages budget within the medical office. Signs off on monthly purchased service invoices, contractual invoices for General Surgery and Bariatric providers and on-call hours invoiced.
  • Creates staff schedules, monitors Kronos activity, signs timecards, review PTO requests, covers for staff absences.
  • Oversees running of office front desk and provides guidance on effective ways to complete various office tasks, including incoming patient referrals, phone triage, check in/check out process.
  • Monitors ordering of office supplies and equipment and maintenance of equipment per protocols.
  • Conducts regular staff meeting with team, addressing concerns/suggestions.
