The Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. About Indiana Department of Environmental Management:
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is seeking a physical science Intern to join our agency in summer 2025. The intern will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to, laboratory analysis, quality control and quality assurance, data analysis, site assessments, collection of samples, and more. IDEM monitors air quality to demonstrate attainment with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, conduct effective non-criteria pollutant monitoring, conduct compliance, complaint, or research monitoring activities. Several of the major components to Air Monitoring are operating air sampling sites throughout the State, analyzing samples on analytical equipment such as GC/MS, and ensuring precision and accuracy of air monitoring data and instruments.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor's degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor's degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
+ Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
+ Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
+ Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
+ Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
+ Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
+ Laboratory analysis using Gas Chromatograph/ Mass spectrometer
+ Evaluating chromatography
+ Equipment preparation and verification
+ Field work assisting with evaluation of siting criteria
+ Field work setting up and collecting samples

What You'll Need for Success:
+ Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
+ Pursuing a degree in chemistry, physical science , or a related field.
+ Academic work in related field
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
+ Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
+ Ability to conduct well-informed research
+ Ability to solve complex, critical problems
+ Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
