Summary of Position

The Grossing Technician Trainee will be trained under the supervision of a grossing technician on grossing protocols in preparation for a Grossing Technologist I position. The primary responsibility of the trainee is to learn the various grossing protocols and to assist with workflow in the Grossing department. Tasks may include but are not limited to the SOPs pertaining to this grossing and processing of samples, including, loading tissue processors, block printing, in-take of cases, imaging, decanting expired tissue, and other duties as assigned and required following approved Standard Operating Procedures.

Key Job Elements

* Performs accurate gross description and dissection of low-complexity surgical specimens according to the guidelines established by the Anatomic Pathology Medical Director.

* Demonstrates the ability to appropriately handle and dispose of specimens and chemical waste based on the laboratory's procedural manual and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies.

* Accurately prioritizes and triages cases based on the laboratory's procedural manual.

* Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and immediately notify the histology supervisor/manager, technical supervisor, or director.

* Sustains the gross room workflow by creating consistent flow in and out of the gross room.

* Prints cassettes for specimen containers.

* Photograph cassette racks prior to loading on the tissue processor.

* Loads tissue processors.

* Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the company.

* Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance tests as required. Maintains all necessary documentation and current logs.

* Reports all concerns of test quality and/or patient or employee safety to a supervisor or Safety Officer.

* Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects as required.

* Accepts other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience

* A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in biological, chemical, physical, clinical laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology is required, or enough credits to meet CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b) to perform high-complexity testing.

* 1 to 2 years of experience in a pathology laboratory is preferred.

* Ability to communicate effectively via voice dictation software to create gross descriptions.

* Requires a high degree of care and attention with strict adherence to defined clinical testing protocols.

* Demonstrates a high level of attention to detail in technical data interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.

* Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; specifically, Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.

Lab Specific Qualifications

* Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skills to distinguish fine detail.

* Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment.

* Must possess the ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

* Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.

* Must possess the ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

* May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.

* May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluid.

* Requires flexibility of hours including some weekends, and may be required to work overtime when workflow dictates the need.
