JOB SUMMARYThis is a skilled position that will perform professional techniques in landscape/lawn care maintenance at the Ottawa campus, All Athletic Fields, all athletic practice fields, the Ottawa Mission Cemetery, Pomona Lodge, and other properties in and around the Ottawa, Kansas campus. This position also is responsible for the upkeep of campus motor pool vehicles, maintenance vehicles and all grounds/landscape equipment. This position also involves skilled and semi-skilled work in performing various maintenance and repair tasks in University buildings. Requires communication with University employees and students. Works as a member of the Facility and Plant Operations Department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (provide list of items which are essential to effective outcomes in this role):
- Performs and/or supervises planting, fertilizing, spraying and pruning trees, shrubs, lawns, turf, and flowerbeds. Mixes and applies chemicals used for fertilizing and pest control. Trimming of grass around buildings, trees, etc., edging sidewalks and curbs. Operates landscape equipment, performs equipment maintenance, removes snow, ice and trash from all areas of campus and adjacent University owned property, including the Ottawa Mission Cemetery and Pomona Lodge. Employee must have adequate knowledge in the application, handling, and storage of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers. Employee also will work in conjunction with the maintenance crew on special projects and assignments.
- Performs maintenance operations on mechanical and/or structural systems, such as, boilers, furnaces, air-conditioners, air handling equipment, doors, windows, floors, ceiling tiles, sinks, roof leaks, floor drains, etc. changes belts and other moving parts and lubricates in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Repacks water and steam valves. Replaces faulty electrical switches and receptacles. Takes electrical and pressure readings on air conditioning units and purges air from system. Performs other maintenance necessary to insure continued operation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems within buildings.
- Picks up repair/maintenance requests from maintenance office, inspects job and work with supervisor to determine what materials, tools and equipment are needed to complete the project. Appropriate completion of paperwork is essential.
- Is available for on-call rotation and responds to emergency calls involving loss of utilities, and/or equipment system failure. Resets breakers, rigs emergency power cables, helps repair leaks in water or steam lines, repairs elevators, air conditioners, etc.
- Completes repairs in the carpentry trade such as hanging doors, repair or replacement of windows, door jambs, locks; repairs/rebuilds damaged walls; repairs ceramic tile; replaces floor tile and repairs/replaces wood trim.
- Performs repair and replacement of plumbing fixtures, toilets, and all drain waste vent sewer lines, urinals, sinks, steam pipes, valves, traps, sump pumps, water fountains and showers. Requires a working knowledge of soft copper, hard copper, compression, flare and PVC installation and freshwater systems plus DWV plumbing.
- Will work closely with the General Maintenance/Custodial/Security Departments and will assist as needed.
- Must have a positive work attendance, work in a variety of environments and climatic conditions, have flexibility to work evenings and weekend hours, and the willingness to work overtime as necessary.
