Clayton, NC (Johnston County) *The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader for the Property Maintenance Department. The vision for the Town of Clayton includes a thriving town where growth contributes to the quality of life enjoyed by long-time residents and newcomers alike; easy access but with an atmosphere that feels smaller than it is; a system of parks and greenways that connect people and places; neighborhoods with a variety of quality living options; a town that offers opportunities for people to live, create, shop and eat; a bustling and historic downtown, and businesses that are successful, growing, and investing in the community.Duties & ResponsibilitiesAn employee in this class supervises employees engaged in a variety of work associated with the maintenance of town grounds including town square, cemeteries, lift stations, easements, water towers, walking trails and grounds around various town facilities; responsibilities also include coordinating pre and post events' clean-up, and cleaning trash cans and recycle bins in the downtown area. Work includes scheduling duties, making assignments and communicating with employees throughout the day if assignments change, assuring needed tools and equipment are provided, overseeing and inspecting work, and participating in the work as needed. Work also includes using a computer to schedule work, involves ensuring that crew members take proper tools, equipment, and supplies to the work site, and takes responsibility for work crews and their safety.
  • Supervises Property Maintenance Workers
  • Assigns daily work to general maintenance workers; inspects work in progress and upon completion.
  • Participates in the training, safety, ensures application of safety regulations.
  • Provides input into employee performance evaluations.
  • Documents work performed.
  • Supervises the use of pesticides.
  • Actively participates in grounds maintenance duties such as mowing, weed eating, clearing, applying pesticide and trash removal at town facilities, cemeteries, water towers and downtown areas.
  • Completes work orders.
  • Ensures work materials are at worksite, document supplies used.
  • Operates a variety of equipment as needed, including mowers, weedwhacker, tractor and dump truck; drives to work sites.
  • Schedules use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Mows grass and uses weed-eater around graves at the cemeteries. Assist with other cemetery maintenance duties.
  • Coordinates the use of available equipment, materials and staff.
  • Responds to citizen requests and complaints.
  • Answers public questions and resolves issues.
Special Requirements, Education & Experience
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of grounds maintenance activities.
  • Considerable knowledge of the use of related equipment and materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Working knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices and organizational personnel policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operation of assigned division equipment.
  • Ability to maintain records of work activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to plan work to meet schedules and priorities and to coordinate and collaborate with other staff on meeting needs.
  • Ability to train and lead other workers on a regular basis.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to work independently and without close supervision.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Class A CDL and Pesticide licenses required.
  • Experience in grounds maintenance and equipment operation work, preferably including some supervisory or lead worker experience at the minimum amount/type of experience necessary.
