Description
Objective:
Coordinate, schedule, supervise employees, draft budgets, and ensure the campus grounds remain visually appealing and functional. It's a multifaceted role that combines horticulture, management, and environmental stewardship. Maintain and make improvements to Campus grounds and maintain facilities fleet vehicles.
Key Responsibilities:
Departmental and Operations Management
* Compliance with Local Regulations: Ensuring adherence to local regulations related to landscaping, outdoor spaces, and environmental practices.
* Visual Appeal and Functionality: Maintaining the visual appeal and functionality of campus grounds, including lawns, gardens, walkways, and athletic fields.
* Event Coordination: Orchestrating seamless event experiences by preparing outdoor spaces for gatherings, ceremonies, and recreational activities.
* Team Leadership: Leading dedicated teams of six groundskeepers and maintenance staff to execute landscaping tasks efficiently.
* Budget Management: Handling budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships related to grounds maintenance.
* Safety and Sustainability: Implementing safety procedures, sustainable practices, and pest control measures.
* Equipment and Services: Determining and maintaining, necessary equipment, services, and supplies for effective grounds management
Project Management
* Change, add or replace landscaping as necessary including: Retaining walls, outdated landscaping, flowers/ bulbs, shrubs, trees, and lawns
* Coordinate with contractors and project managers for execution of contracts and insurances.
Fleet Vehicle and Fleet Fuel Management
* Document and maintain facilities fleet of vehicles and grounds equipment.
* Maintain fleet gas tank reconciliation, ordering and distribution.
Snow Removal
* Coordinate and lead snow removal efforts and assign cleaning duties to any facilities employees responsible for such.
General Duties
* Manage campus trees and coordinate with the New Rochelle Public Works Department when removals are necessary.
* Adjust seasonal plantings and decorate the campus for Christmas.
* Maintain the campus roads and sidewalks. Repair or replace within a reasonable scope of work.
* Inspect catch basins on a yearly schedule and have them cleaned or repaired as necessary.
* Assist with any digging of utilities that are within a reasonable scope of work.
* Maintain lawns; scheduling topdressing, over-seeding, fertilization and lawn treatments.
* Assist and coordinate efforts with other departments when necessary.
* Any other duties as requested by directors
Qualifications:
Education
* Bachelor's degree in plant science or other grounds maintenance degree
Experience
* Five years in the ground's management profession
* Proven experience as a ground's manager or relevant position, including experience managing campus facilities.
* Excellent understanding of turf management and horticulture maintenance.
* Ability to run various heavy equipment
* Excellent organizational, leadership, and decision-making skills.
Reporting Structure:
* Reports directly to the Director of Facilities.
* Supervises all department staff with six direct reports staff.
Location:
* The role is based at Iona University's main campus and may require occasional travel to other university properties.
