GROUNDSWORKER II GREEN TEAM
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs gardening, irrigation repairs, maintains water and storm drains, Responsible for turf management and projects to enable reduction of water use at District sites. Incumbents will also perform related work as required. Work schedule will be adjusted to allow irrigation, storm drain maintenance and other activities on Saturdays. Schedule will be 6:00 am -2:30 pm, Tuesday- Saturday.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are distinguished by the assignment of duties which require a working knowledge of gardening, irrigation and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to perform a wide variety of tasks with only occasional instruction or assistance. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
* Irrigates and cultivates trees, shrubs, turf and ground cover.
* Mows, edges, waters, trims and fertilizes all grass areas and keeps grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
* Plants, waters, trims, fertilizes, weeds and cultivates trees, plants, shrubs, lawns and flowers.
* Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems.
* Prepares athletic fields.
* Cleans and maintains rain gutters and drains.
* Maintains, cleans and assists in the repair of parking and blacktop areas.
* Maintains tools and equipment in proper operating condition and perform minor repairs of grounds tools and equipment.
* Operates equipment including power lawn mowers, edgers, sprayers, tractors, rototillers, air compressors, cement and carpentry tools and related equipment.
* Performs routine pest control duties; sets up rodent traps.
* When not engaged in groundswork activities may assist as required in a variety of custodial or maintenance work throughout the District.
* Drives District trucks and other vehicles as assigned.
* Performs routine safety checks and maintains fluid levels in District vehicles.
Knowledge of:
* Basic English usage, writing and math.
* Basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance, irrigation and gardening work.
* General safety procedures related to grounds maintenance.
* Hazmat, storm drain and safety regulations.
Ability to:
* Work without immediate supervision.
* Maintain work schedules in performing tasks.
* Understand and follow oral and written instructions including simple blueprints and plans.
* Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance.
* Perform heavy physical labor.
* Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload.
* Operate a variety of grounds equipment.
* Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
* Maintain records as required.
* Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
* Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; one (1) year of experience in gardening or maintenance work (supporting documentation may be required); or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities; character references may be checked.
* Good working history and attendance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment:
* Outside environment.
* Subject to adverse weather conditions.
* Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
* Subject to noise from equipment and tools.
* Regular exposure to heat, cold, dust, odors, chemicals, pollen and dirt.
* Ability to work around plants, shrubs and ground covers.
Physical Abilities:
* Good physical condition as determined by pre and current employment inquiries and health reports, school personnel and pupils.
* Possess physical strength and stamina to do strenuous work.
* Heavy work involving lifting, carrying (up to 50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling of objects (up to 100 pounds).
* Standing for extended periods of time.
* Physical dexterity in limbs and finger digits to operate equipment and to perform strenuous manual labor.
* Bending, grasping, stooping and kneeling.
* Walking over rough, uneven surfaces.
* Digging.
* Climbing ladders to trim trees.
* Seeing to perform grounds work.
* Reaching above shoulders.
Hazards:
* Working with machinery having moving parts.
* Exposure to pollen, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, gasoline and motor oil.
* May involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, lifts and ramps.
* Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
LICENSES
Must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
