Job Description :

Performs grounds maintenance at assigned Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) campus locations to keep the grounds safe and beautiful throughout the year. Includes irrigation, turf maintenance, plant, and tree care. This is an important position to the college because all duties performed are visible and contribute greatly to the environment and overall appeal at each campus.

Requires moderate physical effort to perform a variety of gardening maintenance duties including watering grass, flowers, and shrubs, transplant/planting sod, flowers, shrubs, and trees, weeding, pruning, litter removal, mowing, edging and trimming and general equipment maintenance. May assist supervisors in directing the work of part-time staff.

Position will be required to work under various weather conditions ranging from heat, cold, rain, and snow. This position is considered an entry-level groundskeeper.

This position has a regular schedule but requires flexibility and must be available for on-call duties for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

* Tree, turf, and garden maintenance tasks (i.e., mowing, edging, and trimming).

* Perform regular turf and garden equipment maintenance (i.e., fueling, cleaning, inspections).

* Irrigation maintenance assistance.

* Maintain grounds to include watering grass, flowers, and shrubs, transplanting/planting sod, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Weed flower and shrub beds.

* Remove litter.

* Perform overall hazard inspections.

* Remove snow and ice on a 24 hour/365 day on call basis at SLCC campus locations. Areas include parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, and roadways. Application of ice melt in designated locations. Operation and maintenance of equipment associated with snow removal job duties.

* Perform sprinkler emergency repair work on a 24 hour/365 day on call bases at SLCC campus locations.

* Open, complete, and close out work orders in the Sprocket system, enter time worked, and order materials.

* Complete required trainings for equipment and safety.

* Other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

* Zero (0) to one (1) year direct, paid, full-time work experience required.

Trade off 1:1 in experience/education requirement.

Part time experience may be considered on a prorated basis.

* Must have a valid Utah driver's license to operate some equipment.

* In addition to regular work schedule, must be available to work on call for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Preferred Qualifications

* Prefer prior exposure to irrigation systems (sprinkler repair) and caring for plants.

* Commercial Driver License (CDL) helpful, but not required.

* Herbicide and pesticide application license helpful, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Ability to perform a variety of gardening maintenance tasks, including transplanting/planting sod, flowers, shrubs, and trees, weeding flower and shrub beds, general weeding, litter removal, and general equipment maintenance.

* Proficient in maintaining turf and equipment, including mowing, edging, and trimming. Experience in athletic field maintenance, such as seeding, mowing, and striping soccer/baseball fields.

* Skills in proper fueling procedures, cleaning equipment, and ensuring equipment is functioning properly.

* Maintain irrigation systems and turf to ensure proper water distribution and healthy landscapes.

* Ability to complete all college-required training courses.

* Complete all required safety courses to operate low-speed vehicles, tractors, backhoes, forklifts, snowplows, and other equipment.

* Demonstrated ability to safely hook up, unhook, and tow trailers (both forward and in reverse) with low-speed and regular vehicles.

* Capable of removing snow and ice and applying ice melt in designated locations. Proficient in operating and maintaining equipment associated with snow removal. Winter season 24/7 on-call basis at campus locations

* Ability to perform emergency sprinkler repair work on a 24/7, 365-day on-call basis at campus locations.

* Ability to open, complete, and close out work orders in the CMMS (Sprocket) system with proficiency to enter time worked, and order materials. Basic computer skills are needed.

* Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly.

* Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

* Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
