The Grower manages and leads staff of assistant growers, and quality control staff engaged in the growing, care and maintenance of the company's horticultural products that are produced for wholesale sites. Directs the application of technical procedures, timing and metering devices that control frequency, amount, and type of nutrient applications; regulate humidity, ventilation, temperature, and amount of light; and dispense fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides. Monitors crop development and the removal of substandard plants to maintain quality standards. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Put together and manage a crew to see that crops are planted and taken care of in an efficient manner.
- To ensure that other projects that arise are handled in an efficient and timely manner.
- Work with other supervisors in moving labor from one crew to another to ensure that more critical jobs are handled in a manner that is most beneficial to the company.
- Make sure that all work is done in a safe manner to protect all personnel.
- Keep all working areas and grounds clean and free from hazards.
- Work with procurement to ensure that all supplies are properly inventoried or ordered to ensure that schedule is reached.
- Assist with and/or perform additional duties as required by operating needs of the company or as directed by management.
- Set environmental and cultural conditions in greenhouse to reach growing objective.
- Monitor plant development and scouting for diseases and insect issues.
- Trains employees in growing techniques, chemical application, and cultural activities.
- Plans for space allocation based on production reports and sowing schedules.
- Determines rates of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides as required by the crops and applies and/or directs the application of them
- Works closely with Station Manager to schedule staff and assign work; maintains personnel records and provides input into performance evaluations.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to take and follow directions and ability to work with little to no supervision.
- Have a general understanding of computer programs like: Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc
- Must understand the use of injectors, electrical conductivity and pH meter, boom and irrigations systems.
- Thorough knowledge of water lines and be aware of and monitor conditions such as ventilation, light conditions, temperature and humidity.
- Must have in depth knowledge of the safe handling and application of chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.
Minimum Education and Experience:4-year degree in Horticulture or related field and 5 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.Licenses and/or Certificates:Possession of a valid driver's license; Restricted Use Pesticide License a plus.
