Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Environment, Health & Safety Office is hiring for a Hazardous Building Material (HBM) Specialist to expand our ability to ensure the safety of our students and employees from hazardous building materials and assist in moving campus projects forward.

The HBM Specialist will be working directly with the Campus Architect & Engineering (A&E) team to identify potential remediation needs for campus projects. This will include in-person and virtual meetings with architects and engineers. The HBM Specialist will be on-site at campus buildings, taking samples, performing XRF material identification, and will be responsible for the chain of custody for sample analyses done by third-party vendors. Careful documentation, post-abatement site inspections, communication of results, and updating of campus databases is an essential part of this position.

The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services.

Responsibilities:

Provides consultation, performs inspections, and contributes to emergency plan creation in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies.

* 50% Provides basic knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders in a specialized area of safety such as biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)

* 25% Assists with planning and executing technical inspections and consultations to measure compliance and identify practices that ensure safe operation of equipment

* 5% Assists with the planning of emergency plans and protocols

* 20% Assists with logistical activities and investigations of specific health & safety cases, and communicates findings to stakeholders

Qualifications:

Required:

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to share technical information in a way that is understandable to those without technical expertise

* Customer service oriented

Preferred (not required):

* 2 years experience in performing, planning, and coordinating asbestos assessment and abatement of HBM activities

* 2 years experience in building construction/maintenance and or insulation activities

* Certifications: Asbestos Abatement Supervisor , Asbestos Abatement Inspector, Lead (Pb) Supervisor, and Lead (Pb) Risk Assessor

License/Certification:

Required

Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Additional Information:

The HBM Specialist may have to work in adverse environments for short periods of time including confined areas, within extreme temperature ranges, at heights above 30 feet, and in noisy or dust-filled areas. There may be situations where protective equipment will need to be worn (i.e., respirator, breathing apparatus, hearing, or eye protection).
