JOB TITLE: Head Custodian (School-Based) LOCATION: Assigned School Building CHARACTERISTICS: Full-Time Classified employee, 12-month contract (260 days) in accordance with SEIU #73 Collective Bargaining Agreement SHIFT: 1st Shift (6:30 am - 2:30 pm) REPORTS TO: Director of Buildings and Grounds and the Building Principal SUPERVISES: School-site custodial staff EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by the School Principal, in collaboration with the Director of Buildings and GroundsOVERVIEW OF THE POSITION To provide a safe and clean learning environment by maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness and efficiency. Takes pride in having the school be a beautiful and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and all others. Serves in lead custodial role in the school. RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Organizes building cleaning plan and expectations for all custodians, as well as assigning additional tasks as needed. 2. Gives input to Principal and Director of Buildings and Grounds regarding evaluation of other building custodians. 3. Calls meetings as needed to communicate priorities or problem-solve with other building custodians. 4. Conducts regular inspections of custodial staff sections (in the school building) for cleanliness. 5. Arranges for substitute coverage of custodians. 6. Maintains building and premises to be neat and clean at all times. Keeps grounds free from rubbish. 7. Reports to and remains at work per stated work hours; remains on school premises during shift. 8. Ensures that the building is opened/closed properly and in a timely manner. 9. Ensures that door and window systems are functioning properly. 10. Shovels and sands/salts sidewalks as appropriate. 11. Move furniture, equipment and supplies as required for school activities. 12. If part of his/her cleaning assignment, cleans corridors, bathrooms and corridor sinks daily. 13. In the rooms/areas for which s/he is responsible for cleaning, s/he cleans the chalkboard/whiteboard, sink, vacuums or sweeps the floor every day, and wipes the countertops once per week. 14. Reports damage of school property immediately upon being known. 15. Complies with local, state and federal ordinances for storage and disposal of trash and waste. 16. Completes all District compliance training as required. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Perform other duties as directed by the Superintendent, Director of Buildings and Grounds, or Principals. EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION/ CERTIFICATES/ QUALIFICATIONS 1. Graduation from high school or technical school or comparable experience. 2. Working knowledge of the methods, tools, mechanical equipment and techniques used in custodial work; working knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions and fire and sanitation codes. 3. Ability to operate various types of power and hand machinery and tools. 4. Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions/directives with a minimum of direction. 5. Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive public, student, and coworker relationships. 6. Clearance of FBI Background check required. 7. TB test within 90 days of hire date; Physical Exam within last year of hire date. 8. Valid First Aid/CPR Cards preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Moderate degree of physical stamina and fitness with occasional lifting up to 75 pounds, and to assist in lifting objects in excess of 75 pounds. Ability to move freely to various locations within the classrooms, offices and other community settings. Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending. Exposure to noise and activity of a school setting. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Compensation: $20.48+/hour commensurate with experience Salary and fringe benefits in accordance with the Winnetka Public Schools School Board and the SEIU #73 Collective Bargaining Agreement.Interested applicants should apply online.
