Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. Duties & Responsibilities The Head Nurse in Ambulatory Care Department has skills and competence and works within the scope of regulatory agency standards and policies and procedures as set forward by HHC and Harlem Hospital. SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Participates in the planning, provision, coordination and evaluation of patient care and unit operations on assigned nursing unit and tour. Participates in the revision, implementation and evaluation of Standards of Care, Performance Improvement (PI) plan, and policies and procedures. Facilitates interdisciplinary processes to achieve positive patient outcomes and efficient delivery of care. Demonstrates and facilitates excellence in nursing practice through coaching, education and mentoring of nursing staff and leading practice change initiatives based on evidence and data analysis. Is a resource person for the professional and allied personnel in clinical area.
  • Plans, coordinates and evaluates nursing practice for the provision of care appropriate to the age and needs of the patients and in concert with the theories of Human Caring and Transcultural Care, NYC Caring Model, and Relationship Based Caring Model.
  • Promotes nursing practice guided by the American Nurses Association Code for Nurses and Patient's Bill of Rights.
  • Promotes safe quality patient care through intra/interdepartmental cooperation and collaboration.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of a registered professional staff nurse.
  • Participates in the implementation and evaluation of an interdisciplinary PI program for the unit
  • Coordinates, analyzes and integrates unit Performance Improvement activities into nursing practice and patient care.
  • Orients staff to emergency procedures, life safety practices, fire safety, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plan and procedures annually.
  • Promotes motivation and productivity through the use of employee and/or labor relations activities.
  • Completes and performance appraisals and competencies for staff as requested by the Nurse Manager.
  • Participates in progressive disciplinary action as assigned.
  • Participates in the interview and selection of staff for assigned unit.
  • Resolves differences in a spirit of cooperation; creates solutions that benefit all parties
  • Able to maintain composure, efficiency and positive customer service-oriented manner during periods of peak workload
  • Participates in the Customer and Staff Satisfaction initiatives
  • Adheres to the ICARE standards of Customer Service
Minimum Qualifications For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1, 2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory: 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and 2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and 3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse. For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020, based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the Laws of 2018: 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and a) A Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or university, registered with the NYSED; or b) Obtains a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in a above, within ten (10) years of the date of initial licensure; and 2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and 3.
