Job Title: Health Center Director (HCD)

Reports to: Executive Director (CEO)

Camp Nejeda is a unique summer camp in New Jersey dedicated to serving families with type 1 diabetes. Since 1958, it has provided a safe, supportive, and fun environment where campers can enjoy traditional camp activities while learning to manage their diabetes alongside peers who understand their challenges. Camp Nejeda's mission is to empower people with type 1 diabetes to develop confidence, independence, and friendships that last a lifetime.

PURPOSE:

The Health Center Director (HCD) is responsible for staffing, organizing, and supervising the operations of the Health Center for the Camp Nejeda Foundation (CNF). This role ensures that the Health Center functions effectively year-round, maintaining high standards of medical care and supporting the camp's mission. The primary focus of this position at camp is to serve children in an overnight camp setting over the summer months.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Active New Jersey clinical license. (e.g. RN, PA, MD)
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in diabetes
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other directors
  • Experience in pediatrics preferred
  • Comfortable with using technology.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Leadership: The main responsibility for this position is to lead the HC team at camp each week of 8 weeks of summer camp. The HCD will rely on guidance from the onsite Pediatric Endocrinologist, and Family Practice Resident, making safety a priority for campers, counselors and staff.
  • Staffing & Recruitment: Recruit, hire, train, and manage nursing staff and Health Center support staff (both paid and volunteer) for all CNF programs. Overnight camp as well as day camps, family camps, and other programs.
  • Health Center Orientation: Work with Health Center team to orient camp physicians and medical residents for their roles in the camp programs. Organize and provide medical training for program staff during staff week and as required throughout the year.
  • Health Center Preparation: Ensure the Health Center is fully prepared before each program, with adequate medical supplies, medications, and proper documentation. Order, inventory, and supervise the stocking of medical supplies, both purchased and donated, for all programs. Work with the Development Director to secure appropriate diabetes-related medical supplies as donations.
  • Medical Committee Coordination: HCD manages the Medical Committee meetings held five times annually and contribute to discussions on health guidelines and policies. Regularly evaluate Health Center protocols and contribute to the development of new guidelines as necessary. Maintain the Medical Guide, updating it with new policies or procedures.
  • Pre-Camp Medical Review: Review all camper and staff medical forms before camp sessions begin. Discuss with attending physician, HC team, and Program team when necessary.
  • Prepare site for camper intake and outtake day: Work closely with entire camp team to ensure the HC team is ready and the medical stations at camp are prepared for the 70- 90 families that are coming to camp to drop off or pick up their camper.
  • Staff who directly report to HCD include 5-6 nurses each week, 4 HC assistants, 5 technology facilitators who are hired for 8 weeks

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

    • Attend weekly Department/Director meetings during summer camp and participate in weekly evening counselor or staff meetings as needed.
    • Work with the Camp Directors and Medical Directors and provide feedback related to HC employee performance. Compose and submit an annual report after the close of the Summer Camp program, summarizing key accomplishments and areas for improvement.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with pharmaceutical and medical industry representatives.
    • Compliance & Safety: Collaborate with Program Directors to ensure that the facility complies with ACA accreditation, NJ Department of Health standards, and CNF guidelines.
    • Professional Affiliations: Maintain an active presence in relevant mission-related organizations such as DECA, AADE, and NJSSNA. Represent Camp Nejeda at local, state, and national meetings, exhibits, health fairs, diabetes expos, and support groups.

    HOURS AND TIMING

    Manage the HC during all programs – mostly June through early September.

    October- April 10-15 hours per week or as needed.

    April to mid-June 10-20 hours per week or as needed.

    June 15- August 15 6 days per week including Sundays. (full time 8-10 hours/day plus)
