PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the Trauma Program Manager's direction, The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the accurate and timely collection, maintenance, and analysis of trauma data within the hospital's trauma registry. The role supports the trauma program by ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, providing data for performance improvement initiative, and assisting with the preparation of reports and audits. The trauma registrar collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality trauma care documentation. Participates in local, state, and national meetings as required. Serves as a resource for trauma injury coding and maintains confidentiality of registry data, providing it for research as appropriate.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

EPIC abstraction; Trauma registrar; Trauma research; Trauma Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement; Assist with Bariatric Surgery data collection and analysis (0.2 FTE, one day a week).

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collects and codes clinical data from all sources into the trauma registry database.
  • Interacts with physicians, nurses, and trauma team members; maintains the registry within 60 days of discharge.
  • Ensures data accuracy, validation, and timely submission per state and national guidelines.
  • Resolves coding issues and seeks assistance when necessary.
  • Protects patient confidentiality and sensitive hospital data.
  • Participates in trauma performance improvement activities and meets continuing education requirements.
  • Identifies patterns in injury mechanisms to support prevention initiatives.
  • Prepares data reports in formats like Excel and PowerPoint for internal and external use.
  • Submits data to TQIP, NTDB, and New York State and supports trauma research programs.
  • Assists with Bariatric Surgery data collection to maintain the Bariatric Center of Excellence.
  • All duties are performed on the Kings County Hospital campus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possession of a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential from AHIMA and two (2) years of satisfactory experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, of which one (1) year has been in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity; or

2. Possession of a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential from AHIMA and four (4) years of satisfactory experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, of which two (2) years have been in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity; or

3. Possession of a valid certificate as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from AHIMA and six (6) years of satisfactory experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, of which three (3) years have been in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity; or

4. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.
