Description of position:

West Physics has an immediate opening for a Health Physicist/Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) based in Augusta, GA. This position requires a solid clinical background in health physics, a strong interest and aptitude for learning, and a can-do attitude with an excellent work ethic. The selected candidate should possess strong leadership and management skills. This position is best suited for someone with excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently as well as part of a project team, and strong technical proficiency. The ability to exercise a high degree of responsibility and autonomy (once trained) is integral to this position. This position will require periodic travel; some overnight travel on average 2-4 days per month.

Prerequisites:

  • M.S. degree (M.S.) in Health Physics or a physics-related discipline. (Medical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, etc.)
  • At least six months of professional full-time experience in a health physics role that includes medical and applied health physics applications and other areas such as research, academia, or industrial applications.
  • RSO-eligible: on track towards meeting the necessary NRC and equivalent Agreement State requirements for RSO as a goal.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with basic health physics activities (e.g., survey instrument used, survey technique, leak testing, dosimetry review, etc.) and a willingness and aptitude to master more advanced health physics skills and activities.
  • The ability to understand and apply regulations from a wide variety of State and Federal entities to a variety of client situations, as well as the ability to write effective policies and procedures, Radiation Safety Manuals, and user-friendly forms.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to be professional, courteous, and convincing or persuasive in discussions with clients, regulators, and colleagues.
  • Strong technical proficiency, the ability to manage multiple complex assignments concurrently and to completion, very strong attention to detail, and the ability to deliver exceptional client service.
  • The ability to troubleshoot problems, brainstorm options, and come to logical conclusions that best serve the company mission and its customers.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • The ability to work well under pressure, to prioritize tasks, and to manage multiple priorities and deadlines properly.
  • A working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as very good general computer skills. Familiarity with Apple computers (i.e., macOS) and applications is a plus.
  • Candidate must be willing and open to be trained on new opportunities and activities to enhance their technical skill set
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Answer radiation safety and health physics questions from client personnel.
  • Assist client personnel with radiation safety-related compliance activities.
  • Perform nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, industrial and academic radiation safety audits.
  • Perform radioactive materials (RAM) licensing activities on behalf of clients, including license applications, renewals, potential enforcement activity, consulting activity, and response.
  • Perform dosimetry review, worker and patient dose estimates, and fetal dose estimates.
  • Perform shielding designs and conduct shielding verification testing.
  • Perform leak-testing and other radiological assay and analysis operations.
  • Conduct dose investigations and ALARA reviews.
  • Assist health physicists and senior health physicists with more complex consulting duties.
  • Assist medical physicists and senior medical physicists with diagnostic radiology equipment testing.
  • Data review for CT, PET, fetal dose, etc.
  • Other related duties as needed.
