The Highway Maintenance Supervisor supervises and directs highway maintenance and construction crews for the county and state transportation system. This position coordinates project resources as needed throughout the year.* Directs knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision to participate in decisions on hiring, retention, discipline, and other personnel matters; supervises and manages activities of staff that includes determining work procedures and schedules and developing methods for expediting workflow; approves employee requests for leave and overtime as required by operational necessity; evaluates employee performance; coaches and counsels staff to achieve improved performance and productivity; recommends corrective disciplinary action as needed; identifies individual training needs in order to achieve greater departmental performance and productivity.* Upholds and adheres to county policy and procedures along with Highway Department workplace rules and expectations; advises and provides interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.* Exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity to coordinate, strategize, and oversee multiple projects effectively and within timelines; monitors road conditions for repair and maintenance needs; identifies road hazards; assists in developing road maintenance and construction schedule; coordinates and supervises personnel, equipment, and materials for scheduled projects assigned by direct supervisor; reviews equipment and material needs, and product availability and suitability; participates in planning and coordinating projects with Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT), townships, or other local entities; schedules equipment needs with shop operations; inspects construction projects for quality control; supervises progress and productivity of projects to report to Operations Manager.* Demonstrates exceptional fiscal management to maintain project costs; assists the Operations Manager on projected cost for maintenance and construction projects; reviews all labor, equipment and material costs related to field maintenance and construction to assure proper cost allocation to projects; measures productivity of work completed, and computes materials and labor used; prepares and submits reports as required.* Responds to changing weather conditions and emergencies requiring department maintenance; dispatches on-call personnel as needed.* Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external partners; attends and participates in county meetings as required; provides information and reports as requested; attends and participates in required training sessions and departmental meetings; receives and responds to public inquiries, concerns and comments regarding department projects and road maintenance; answers and routes phone calls to appropriate personnel; responds to inquiries from county employees and the public.* Performs other related duties as required or assigned.* High school diploma or equivalent.* Five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.* One (1) year of full-time work experience at a supervisory or management level.* Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check.* Position will require a pre-employment physical exam.* Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.* Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.* Must obtain a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License without L (air brake) restriction within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter during employment.* Vocational training in equipment repair or a closely related field.
