The Abingdon Residency covers the following counties: Smyth and Washington. Are you able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments) and perform manual labor? As a maintenance operator, you will:
- Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
- Attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
- Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
- Participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
- Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
- Ability to perform safe/skilled operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Safety shoes required.
