Overview:

Dynamic and self-motivated horticultural/greenhouse professional to oversee the daily operations of a greenhouse and maintenance of surrounding property. Responsible for the daily planning, organization, and administration of greenhouse, nursery and property-related activities on Wheatley Farms in Brookville, NY. The horticulturist will work with an interdisciplinary team to ensure that the greenhouse business runs efficiently and profitably and will supervise and work with people of varied skills and abilities. Care and maintenance of plants including watering, pest control and treatment, planting, property management for designated areas of campus and plant sales are required. Public engagement, tours and working with a large and diverse group of volunteers with a variety of abilities is essential. This position works in conjunction with administrative and supervisory clinical, therapeutic, and fine arts staff to create a healthy, wholesome environment for people with and without disabilities, to therapeutically engage with the soil, land, and fauna. A respectful, professional demeanor is expected in all interactions.

Responsibilities:

Primary duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Oversee greenhouse, nursery and property-related activities and perform all aspects of growing from seed to finished plant including planting, transplanting, deadheading, cutback, clean-up, hand-watering, weeding, pruning, mulching.
  • Check and maintain greenhouse environmental conditions/controls.
  • Plan and design annual and perennial flower/vegetable beds. Grow potted plants and nursery stock and maintain records of the growing operation.
  • Monitor the health of all plants and monitor for insects and disease. Recommend appropriate treatments including pesticide if needed.
  • Prepare orders, maintain stock, and process requisitions and invoices for required supplies including but not limited to plants and seeds, plant nutrients, disease control chemicals, soil and garden equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records including pesticide and watering logs.
  • Assist in educational programming and work closely with Day Habilitation staff and groups to offer weekly learning and hands-on plant care activities.
  • Manage greenhouse volunteers, assigning tasks and reviewing thoroughness of work completed.
  • Research and attend local markets to sell plants, flowers, and vegetables.
  • Provide support to the marketing team by taking photos and short videos for use on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Identify and report any issues to the Business Operations Manager or Program Administration in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Assist Business Operations Manager with monthly written reports outlining operational status, progress, and concerns.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the landscape through daily monitoring/walkthroughs.
  • Create floral arrangements/centerpieces, as applicable.
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma required; associate or bachelors degree in horticulture, environmental science, or botany preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a Greenhouse or Nursery required, three (3) or more years experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications required.
  • Experience with customer relations and invoice management required.
  • Qualified NYS Drivers License required.
  • Ability to work flex hours, including evenings and weekends, required.

The work generally requires extended periods of standing and walking and will require a moderate amount of bending, and the ability to handle and move merchandise weighing up to 50 lbs.
