SUMMARY The City of Bentonville's Park and Recreation Department is looking for an experienced Horticulturist to join the team. The Horticulturist is responsible for selecting, breeding, growing, planting, and displaying flowers, shrubs, and other plants in public buildings, parks property, or rights-of-way.

The horticulturist performs regular inspections for insect, weed, and disease problems with knowledge of best management practices. Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal as required. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. This Position reports to the Parks Foreman-Grounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting relationships, work assignments, work schedules may be subject to change to meet City needs or operational requirements. Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsible for supervising seasonal employees and volunteer lead projects.

Responsible for working with Parks Foreman and department Crew Leaders to oversee operations during inclement weather event. This position is considered an essential services position that requires work to be performed during extreme weather and in natural disaster events.

Works with Parks Foreman, Parks Maintenance Manager, Parks and Recreation Director to assist with determining the need for park improvements, capital projects and necessary budget items.

Design, implement and maintain public gardens in public parks throughout the park system.

Landscape Beds (Existing) check, repair, weed, replant, remove, till, mulch, prune, water, fertilize.

Trees (New) plant, water, mulch, fertilize.

Trees (Existing) water, mulch, fertilize, remove, prune.

Removes dead or damaged trees or tree limbs.

Greenhouse Plant Propagation and maintenance.

Assists with community volunteer planting efforts, program administration, and implementation.

Cleans grounds and removes litter.

Keeps storm drains and culverts free of debris.

Rakes and/or bags leaves.

Shovels snow from walks, biking trails, and spreads ice-melt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup.

Confers with the Parks Maintenance Manager to help coordinate the support of activities of other City Departments.

Interprets company policies to workers. Acts as the On Site supervisor for enforcing safety regulations.

Assist with special projects performed by the Parks and Recreation Department including, but not limited to, construction projects, special events or programming and holiday lights display.

Performs activities of workers supervised.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervises Parks Maintenance Workers and seasonal temporary workers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Assists Parks Maintenance Supervisor with performance appraisals.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school graduate or GED equivalent required.

Associates or bachelor's degree in horticulture, botany, natural science or related field of study is preferred.

Minimum of 3 - 4 years of hands-on-experience in a public garden or conservatory, with in-depth knowledge of plant culture, maintenance, and identification is preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

* Must have and maintain a valid Arkansas driver's license.

* Arkansas Plant Board Certifications.

* Arkansas Chemical Applicator license preferred.
