Carney, Sandoe & Associates is a leading education recruitment organization seeking a Human Resources Director at an independent school in Brooklyn, NY.

Summary

This is a newly created, full-time, 12-month position on campus. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for managing comprehensive aspects of the school's human resources functions, including compensation, employee benefits, recruitment and talent acquisition, onboarding, career development, retention, employee separation, leaves of absence, performance management, job descriptions, record-keeping, workers compensation, and ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations. The Director provides strategic leadership and counsel on personnel matters, impacting employee welfare and fostering a positive work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and guidance by overseeing hiring, talent acquisition, recruitment, career development, retention, training, and leadership development.
  • Advise leadership on disciplinary issues that arise and possible legal implications with consultation of the School's attorney.
  • Oversee benefits programs, host open enrollment events, and make recommendations to school leadership regarding benefit changes.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive performance review and recognition process for administrative staff.
  • Work in partnership with the CFO, Head of School, and Assistant Head of School to develop and implement comprehensive compensation and benefits plans that are competitive within the marketplace.
  • Consistently review employment practices and ensure School compliance, as well as analyze the School's existing policies and procedures to propose improvements.
  • Help oversee the maintenance of employment manuals, ensuring all policies continue to meet the School's needs.
  • Manage employee separation process for both voluntary and involuntary terminations, and conduct exit interviews as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between employees and senior school administrators concerning employees' personnel matters, including grievances, accommodations, and leaves of absence.
  • Work with the CFO to oversee and manage the School's retirement plans to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in the School's risk management program and work proactively to mitigate risk in the human resources area.
  • Proactively work to develop rapport with employees with the goal of fostering a culture of open communication between employees and the human resources team.
  • Remain up to date regarding HR trends and best practices, regulatory and employment law changes, and technologies and communicate important updates and suggestions proactively to school leadership.

Education and Experience:

  • MA/MS in Human Resources or related field, preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of executive HR experience, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills that lead to the cultivation of relationships with colleagues.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with care and professionalism.
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws and practices, including EEO, ERISA, ADA, Workers' compensation, FMLA, FLA, PFL, HIPAA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Proven working knowledge of human resources concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and experience with varied human resource information systems.
  • Proficient in analyzing data related to human resources.
  • SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certification is preferred.
