Cal OES is recruiting for multiple Emergency Hire positions in support of the Disaster Response and Recovery efforts in Southern California. The successful candidates for this role will be a communicator with media relations expertise, a passion for news, a commitment to equity and the creativity to build an audience on our social and owned-media platforms. The ideal candidates will have a background in public sector communications, news, journalism or social media. Job Summary The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is recruiting for multiple Information Officer I positions within the Office of Crisis Communication and Public Affairs. This professional communicator should have public education expertise, a passion for team and staff development, commitment to equity and the organizational skills to help the team. This role is part of a larger team of Public Information Officers (PIOs) and will work within a larger growing team of 20+ media professionals. Community Outreach and Resilience Unit The Community Outreach and Resilience unit functions well under pressure and understands education and outreach efforts. In addition to helping with Cal OES' public information campaigns, this unit helps with media relations, communications, owned media and public information functions, while ensuring that the department's communication strategy and tactics consistently delivers messages that motivate people to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. Public Information and Media Relations Unit The Public Information and Media Relations unit is responsible for responding to media inquiries, drafting responses for sensitive media requests, social media posts, writing talking points, scripts and other written materials as well as other products as needed. Members of the unit staff speakers at community meetings, assist with event preparation and related activities. **Applications are scheduled to be released to the hiring manager on the following dates:

**Emergency Appointments (Ehires) will only be considered. **
  • An emergency hire appointment can work up to 189 days in 12 consecutive months, based on the needs of the disaster.
  • Positions are paid on an hourly basis, once a month, during the first week of the month following the closure of the pay period. An emergency hire appointment is not eligible for medical benefits or a retirement program.
  • Emergency hire appointments earn state service and sick leave and vacation based upon actual time worked.
  • Civil Service Examinations are not required for appointment.
