General Summary- The Technician delivers orders to nursing units, restocks automated dispensing cabinets, troubleshoots problems with automated dispensing cabinets, compounds non-sterile preparations via USP 795 requirements, compounds sterile products via aseptic technique according to USP 797 and 800 standards, and acts as a receptionist for the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Responds to hospital staff requests for medication or information. Follows through to meet patient needs.
- Answers questions presented by other pharmacy staff, nursing and physicians by researching in EPIC and/or other resources as appropriate.
- Participates and /or contributes to Pharmacy and hospital improvement activities.
- Performs simple pharmacy calculations and uses reference material efficiently.
- Operates and utilizes all aspects of the pharmacy automation and software.
- Troubleshoots problems with automated dispensing cabinets and assists in coordination of vendor technician resolution.
- Performs all safety checks (barcode scans and visually inspects) during the checking process of first doses, cart fills, automated dispensing cabinet restocking, etc.
- Completes biannual IV Room competency within designated timeframes.
- Prepares compounded non-sterile products accurately and per pharmacy policy.
- Prepares all compounded sterile products accurately with good aseptic technique. Maintains adequate volumes of prepared compounds and binaries as needed for patient care and per pharmacy policy
- Prepares hazardous medications according to hospital policy during both general dispensing and IV preparation via closed-system transfer device (CTSD).
- Ensures that all excess supplies are put away and that the hoods are cleaned before leaving for the day and all USP 797 documentation is complete on a daily basis.
- Participates in training of new technicians and pharmacists in an appropriate capacity based on experience.
- Participates in department inspection initiatives throughout the organization to ensure medication is within date and stored within manufacturer regulated parameters.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature and professional organizations.
- Additional duties upon certification:
- Assists the pharmacist with controlled substance driven tasks (restocks, patient specific, misc pharmacy tasks)
Education- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Work Experience- One year of pharmacy experience preferred but not required.
Certification/License- Will be required to register or apply for Pharmacy registration after interview prior to start date. Must become a Certified Pharmacy Technician within one year of employment.
Mental/Physical Requirements- Considerable mental concentration required completing duties. Standing and walking up stairs 75% of shift is required. Light lifting (25lbs) required. Ability to perform fine manipulation of small vials, syringes, and needles is required.
Working Conditions- Most of workday spent in Pharmacy, with frequent rounds to Patient Care Units. Considerable refrigerator/freezer, Automation, printer, telephone, and IV room noise. Exposure to differing pressure barriers when working in the IV Rooms as well as strong smelling chemicals used in cleaning IV Rooms.
