VDOT's Construction Inspector is the job for you Job Duties VDOT's Staunton District Construction section is seeking a highly motivated Construction Inspector. As the qualified candidate, you will inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff, ensuring construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications and providing a quality transportation system for the traveling public. Specifically, you will: Track and maintain materials documentation for project. Communicate with VDOT support staff and external support staff to address landowner, business owner and traveling public concerns regarding project. Provide project oversight to ensure assigned QC tasks are monitored and documented for contract compliance. Construction & Contract Compliance: Ensure construction activities are performed in accordance with contract, plans and applicable documents to include environmental, erosion and sediment controls, safety, traffic controls and EEO and DBE guidelines, regulations and permits. Ensure all materials are tested and approved for acceptance before use on project and proper documentation is in hand before payment. Ensure project employees and equipment are performing in compliance with safety practices and directives. Minimum Qualifications • Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry. • Valid driver's license. • Skill in the use of computers and software applications. • Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing. • Safety shoes required. • Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents. • Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection. • Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment. • Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files. • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public. Additional Considerations • Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology. • DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN) • Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans. • Asphalt Field Level II • Possession of current certifications and completion of fall protection and confined space training. • Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects. • DEQ: Inspector for Storm Water Management (SWM IN) • Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm. • Radiation Safety USDOT HAZMAT Certification (Nuclear Gauge) • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety • Proficient in Site Manager or other project management software. • Soils & Aggregate Compaction • Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection. • Asphalt Field Level I • CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course • Guard Rail Installer Training (GRIT) • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Level I (CCWA) OR WACEL Concrete I Certification • Flagger • Pavement Marking • A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Drafting, or related field desired. • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.
