Hourly Pay Rate Range: $15.00/hour - $18.00/hour based on number of college credit hours completed.
Under immediate supervision, this position is responsible for learning and assisting in engineering tasks as required within various Divisions and Districts of the Department.

* Perform or assist in performing a variety of engineering tasks in a learning capacity.
* Receive specialized training from designated training personnel regarding the application of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria within rules, regulations, specifications, and operating procedures of the Department.
Applicable to Design Engineers
* Assist in the collection, analysis and evaluation of data and design types as directed for inclusion in the project plans.
* Train in the production of layouts, structural details and related technical drawings using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD).
* Support activities and processes to assemble design drawings, specifications and bid quantities, and make cost estimates for completed projects.
* Collaborate with structural detailers in plan preparation of projects which they have designed.
* Assist in efforts to prepare detailed analytical reports in connection with project studies.
* Participate and support the translation of data findings into understandable and usable language and provide assistance in implementing results.
Applicable to Planning Engineers
* Learn methods of evaluating travel patterns and producing various traffic models.
* Support and contribute to the analysis and recommendation of solutions to address transportation mobility and safety needs.
* Participate in transportation planning activities and studies.
* Train in the assessment of transportation system performance.
* Assist in the preparation of bid proposals, contract files and other related documents.
Applicable to Materials Engineers
* Train on methods used to conduct quality assurance tests of materials used on Department projects.
* Assist in the monitoring of materials problems and functions for construction and maintenance activities.
Applicable to Resident Engineer Offices
* Learn and assist work involving the construction and inspection of various projects within the District.
* Attend, participate and assist in meetings and site visits for assigned projects.
* Drive a Department vehicle frequently to various locations within the District.
Applicable to Surveys Engineers
* Learn and contribute to processes and procedures used in the planning and execution of highway surveys as well as best practices in terms of compiling and analyzing data.
* Assist with the review and submission of completed survey data to appropriate Divisions within the Department.
* Support the evaluation, testing, and documentation of geospatial technologies for implementation.
* Receive training regarding Department data collection and CADD programs.
* Participate in and learn procedures used for the operation of the Department's statewide control network.
Applicable to Maintenance Engineers
* Train on and learn various phases of highway maintenance and the Maintenance Management Program.
* Assist in and contribute to maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with District personnel and Area Maintenance Supervisors in order to assist in solving maintenance problems.
* Participate in discussions and research efforts designed to analyze and recommend solutions to maintenance problems.
Minimum Requirements
Education and experience: Student pursuing the educational equivalent of a bachelor's degree or master's degree in civil engineering from an EAC of ABET accredited college or university, completion of 30 college hours toward this degree, and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
Knowledge, skills and abilities: Ability to apply basic engineering formulas to routine calculations. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Detail oriented.
