Job ResponsibilitiesPlease note: This position is 40 hours per week/44 weeks per year on campus. 40 weeks (nine months) are scheduled mid-August to mid-May for the fall and spring semesters. Four weeks (one month) are scheduled during the summer between mid-May and mid-August. A weekly schedule is established each semester, which will require flexibility to support student schedules, including the ability to work weekdays Monday through Friday within the hours of 8am to 10pm and occasionally on the weekends. The interpreter's work will be onsite at RIT's Henrietta campus.This position is critical in providing interpreting services for signed and spoken discourse in classrooms, meetings, interviews, and other on campus events.Responsibilities include:
  • Assess communication interactions and adjust interpreting to ensure accurate interpretation.
  • Demonstrate ability to fluently interpret/transliterate moderately paced lectures.
  • Provide sign to spoken English interpretation for clients who use either signed English or ASL. Provide sign to spoken English interpreting.
  • Accurately represent subtlety of intent for longer, complex discourse in classroom and other interpreting assignments with client who use a wide variety of language modalities.
  • Can critique interpretations by self and others and make meaningful assessments of skill.
  • Occasionally demonstrates some ability to assess and use appropriate processing method (lexical, phrasal, sentential, textual) based on source and target languages, needs of consumers and cultural protocol.
  • Assigned to a wide variety of clients throughout the Institute. May be considered for high visibility/sensitive assignments.
  • Accountable for accurate interpretation between deaf and hearing students, faculty and staff.
  • Confer with consumers, preview available materials and research additional resources to prepare for assignments.
  • Skills suitable for all content areas within the core team and many outside areas.
  • Maintain a healthy work practice through application of biomechanical principles. Complete a biomechanic evaluation every two years.
  • Target hours and actual interpreting hours reviewed: 24 hours for full-time, 14 hours for part-time.
  • Develop and implement a professional development plan.
  • Exhibit a commitment to and demonstration of RIT values; set these goals in Plan of Work (POW).
  • Exhibit a commitment to and demonstration of diversity and inclusion; set these goals in POW.
  • Participate in committee and project work.
  • Maintain effective communication with consumers, operations staff and colleagues regarding the provision of service.
  • Provide trainings, mentoring, observation and diagnostic feedback to junior colleagues; able to mentor Apprentice and Associate Interpreters.
  • Attend core team and DAS staff meetings.
  • Maintain daily and accurate timecard using the online payroll system.

Department/College DescriptionThe Department of Access Services (DAS) at RIT/NTID seeks candidates to join the largest staff of interpreters working in postsecondary education. RIT/NTID is a dynamic, language-rich environment of 1,200 deaf students, staff, and faculty on a campus of nearly 17,000 students. DAS boasts a phenomenal professional development program that offers over 400 hours of PD annually. The interpreting component of Access Services is organized into six interpreting teams. Interpreters work primarily in the specialized content areas of their teams, which correspond with the eleven colleges of RIT.DAS hires interpreters whose skills range from entry level to senior level.
