In its PPP & Projects business, John Laing partners with governments, local authorities and other highly rated institutions to develop and deliver core infrastructure projects that are sustainable for the long-term and which serve the needs of local communities.

In its Mid-market core Infrastructure business, John Laing invests in developing and growing core infrastructure businesses and platforms which are asset intensive and provide essential or critical infrastructure.

Previously listed on the London Stock Exchange and a member of theFTSE250, John Laing was taken private in 2021 by KKR's Diversified Core Infrastructure Fund (DCIF). Under DCIF ownership, John Laing operate sas a standalone business with its own team and capabilities.

DCIF is an open-ended fund that was launched in 2020 and has raised US$6.9 billionto date. DCIF's investors include large pension funds, insurance companies and sovereign wealth funds. John Laing works closely with the KKR infrastructure team, benefiting from the access to capital, investment opportunities and transaction execution experience.

THE ROLE AND OPPORTUNITY

In this role, the Associate will work as part of the Investments team, contributing to the growth of the business by taking a leading transactional role in John Laing's during the bidding, financial close and valuation process.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In this position at John Laing, the Associate will be able to:

  • Take primary responsibility for financial modelling and investment analysis of investment opportunities
  • Fully understanding the financial risks on the project and control the transfer of those risks, working with the commercial, financial and operational team to deliver viable investments
  • Take contribute to various due diligence workstreams during a project bid or M&A transaction
  • Contribute to the preparation of the necessary Investment Committee papers
  • Contribute to the half year and year end valuation process, including:
  • Detailed financial modelling for a portfolio of projects, review of macro assumptions and presentation of outputs to the Portfolio Review and Valuation Committee.
  • Provide scenario analysis for the valuation and to support decision making.
  • Contribute to updates of the valuation methodology and ensure compliance with internal valuation controls and processes.
  • Collaborate and work closely with Asset Directors to provide financial and commercial input to track project performance, identify risks and opportunities, and assess potential impact on project value.
  • Communicate with external auditors and independent valuers to satisfy reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with Sponsors to understand and agree financial and commercial positions and ensure these are properly reflected in the financial model
  • Contribute to negotiations with counterparties (including financing parties) and with co-investors
  • Keep up to date with current market trends, including any established market practices and/or published guidance

IDEAL EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES

  • Proven Financial Modelling skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills - credible in dealing with end-user client, their legal team and other consortia partners
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • A hands-on and pragmatic approach / flexible
  • Strong written communication - report writing skills as well as verbal communication skills
  • Proven critical problem solving skills and the ability to implement the resultant solution
  • Able to work independently and collaborate within and across globally distributed teams
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and development
  • Relevant degree or equivalent
  • A financial, legal or construction related qualification is an advantage

BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE (not required)

  • Outstanding Financial Modelling skills and 2 to 3 years' transactional experience, ideally with a financial institution
  • Relevant experience – PPP and Energy experience highly desirable
  • Experience of contributing to the negotiation of financing agreements and closure of long-term complex transactions
