Position Overview: The Jail Maintenance Specialist I is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair duties to ensure the proper functioning and safety, and of jail facilities. This position assists in the upkeep of the facility's buildings, grounds, equipment, and security systems under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor. The role involves routine inspections, preventive maintenance, basic repairs, and responding to maintenance requests from jail staff. Essential Job Functions Key Responsibilities:General Maintenance & Repairs
  • Perform general maintenance and repair of jail facility infrastructure, including plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, welding (gas and electric) lighting, flooring, walls, and doors.
  • Conduct regular inspections of jail buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, and areas for improvement.
  • Respond to work orders and maintenance requests in a timely manner, prioritizing urgent or high-priority tasks.
  • Perform minor repairs and installations of facility fixtures such as toilets, sinks, faucets, and light fixtures.
  • Assist with maintaining the functionality of industrial equipment, such as kitchen appliances, laundry machines, and custodial equipment.
Preventive Maintenance
  • Participate in routine preventive maintenance programs for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other systems to prevent breakdowns and prolong equipment life.
  • Monitor and maintain critical facility systems, including air conditioning, heating, and ventilation, to ensure optimal operation.
Facility Security & Systems Support
  • Assist in maintaining the security and functionality of surveillance systems, alarms, locks, and other facility security-related systems.
  • Collaborate with security staff to ensure maintenance activities do not compromise safety or security protocols.
Recordkeeping & Documentation
  • Maintain accurate records of completed maintenance tasks, including work orders, materials used, and time spent.
  • Document all safety inspections and maintenance activities according to facility policies and procedures.
Emergency Repairs & Special Projects
  • Assist in emergency repairs and support during critical incidents or facility shutdowns.
  • Participate in special maintenance projects as needed, including upgrades, remodels, or large-scale repairs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Constant physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, and lifting heavy materials. Requires stamina and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks throughout the shift. May involve working in physically challenging environments or conditions.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS: Duties may require work in both climate-controlled indoor environments and outdoor locations exposed to varying weather conditions. The role may involve exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and mechanical equipment. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided and must be worn as required. Employees may encounter extreme temperatures, especially when working outdoors or in unconditioned spaces. The position may require working from ladders, scaffolding, or other elevated surfaces. The role may require working outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call duties as needed.SAFETY EQUIPMENT & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Employees are required to adhere to all safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to ensure a safe working environment. Specific requirements include:
  • Mandatory PPE: Employees must wear designated PPE, which may include safety goggles, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, and respiratory masks, depending on the tasks performed.
  • Safety Training: All employees will receive training on the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and PPE to minimize risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Inspection and Maintenance: Employees are responsible for regularly inspecting their PPE for wear and tear and reporting any damaged equipment to their supervisor for replacement.
  • Emergency Equipment: Familiarity with the location and use of emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and eyewash stations, is required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years of facility maintenance experience with basic knowledge of skilled trades such as plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and carpentry.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot common maintenance issues.
  • Basic understanding of safety procedures and regulations, particularly in a correctional facility environment.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Physical ability to lift, move, and carry equipment, tools, and materials as required.
  • Must be able to work in a secure, often stressful, and high-risk environment
  • Must be able to work outside of usual shift hours as needed and may be required to work overnights and for extended periods of time during an emergency or declared event to maintain facility operations.
Additional Information Pay Grade T06PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 2 background screening, which includes FDLE fingerprinting.
