Junior Designer, Square Enix Manga and Books (Remote) Penguin Random House Publisher Services is seeking a Junior Designer for the Square Enix Manga and Books list, which publishes such notable properties as Soul Eater, The Apothecary Diaries, and Final Fantasy. Reporting to the Design Director, the Junior Designer will provide administrative and design support primarily for the cover and jacket design of manga series and trade books. The ideal candidate will have an interest in learning about book design, a passion for manga/anime or gaming strong organizational and communication skills, and a sharp eye for accuracy and consistency. • Assist the Design Director to efficiently maintain the manga and book design lifecycle from initial concepts through reprints

• Track multiple, simultaneous series deadlines, working closely with both in-house staff and freelance designers to keep workflows on schedule

• Track and process freelancer invoices

• Track, route, gather, upload, and archive design files and documents for both in-house staff and freelance designers

• Design English-edition manga covers and other materials, working closely with editors and senior staff to refine designs and establish series branding

• Prepare files for cover design meetings, proof routing, and licensor approval; track comments from reviewers and make changes

• Prepare cover and jacket mechanicals, and package files for prepress.

• Make reprint corrections

• Maintain effective coordination and communication with Square Enix editorial, production, managing editorial, and marketing staff, as well as freelance designers and editors.

• In addition to these responsibilities, performs other activities as assigned

The Essentials:

• 1+ years of on-staff design experience or a design degree from an accredited institution

• Strong proficiency at Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat in a Mac OS environment

• Proficiency at Microsoft Office 365 Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams

• Strong skills in typography and logo design

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy

• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage schedules in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment

• Strong communication skills and ability to function as a highly collaborative, adaptable team player

• Basic familiarity with print production, including working with process and spot colors, the difference between CMYK and RGB, mechanical layouts (dielines, bleed, etc.), image file types and resolution.

• Interest in and familiarity with manga, anime, and/or video games a must

Nice to Have:

• Any level of Japanese-language skill a plus

• Sketching/drawing/illustration skills a plus

• Retouching or lettering experience a plus

• Familiarity with special treatments such as foil and UV plates a plus

The salary for this position is $53,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. Penguin Random House job postings include a good faith compensation range for each open position. The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
