Junior Staff (J-Staff) are rising High School Seniors or 17-year-old High School Graduates who support camp in various support roles while developing their professional skills that support future roles at camp and in the community working with and around youth. J-Staff will be assigned to one cohorteach session working either in the Program Support Cohort (Lifeguarding, Activity Areas, Barn) or in the Operations Support Cohort (Maintenance, Kitchen, Trading Post, Childcare). J-Staff are expected to work two consecutive two-week sessions of camp and will receive training for their assigned role as well as others since they may rotate through assigned work in each support or program area as interested and necessary. J-Staff are supported and coached by the Junior Staff Unit Leader. As minors, J-Staff should expect to follow child safety practices at camp and be under the supervision of mentor staff or the Junior Staff Unit Leader while participating in their Junior Staff experience.Employment Type: Part-time/SeasonalReports to: Junior Staff Unit Leader, Camp EchoSPECIFIC DUTIESOperations:Assists with meal preparation, service, and cleanup.Helps operate the dishwashing process including working the HOBY machine in a safe and efficient manner.Ensures proper storage and labeling of food and kitchen supplies.Helps maintain a safe and clean kitchen and dining hall on a daily basis to meet DOH expectations.Maintenance:Assists with cleaning and sanitization of bath houses and other shared spaces around camp.Collects garbage around camp and disposes in dumpsters.Supports the implementation of camp-wide maintenance projects as assigned.Supports the cleaning of the Dining Hall floor, windows, and deck spaces.Childcare (when necessary):Responsible for supervising and caring for full time/leadership staffs' children including children of senior support staff (Health Officers, Maintenance Staff, etc.) that are not old enough to be enrolled in regular Camp Echo programs.Responsible for creating schedule and programming activities for staff kids.Schedule starts at regular breakfast, through Camptivities and Saska through Twilight Fun.Accompanies staff kids to activities with other campers present (depending on their age, some staff kids may be able to sign up for Camptivities or participate with a cabin during their cabin group).Works closely with staff parents to ensure programming and care is appropriate, seeking constructive feedback for improved performance.Trading Post:Assists Trading Post Manager with distribution of edible and non-edible goods and charging of camper accounts in CampMinder.Supports the daily organization and cleanliness of trading post area, including restocking and organizing shelves/fridge freezer goods, removing trash, sweeping, etc.Program:Lifeguarding:Lifeguards in Camp Echo water areas.Assists with the supervision of campers in water activities and supports the safety in their participation.Plays a role in maintaining safe and organized water activity areas and the proper check-in/out processes.Barn:Assists with all horseback programs including lessons, trail rides, and rings rides.Assists with feeding, watering and grooming horses.Supports keeping the barn, ring, and pasture clean and organized before, during, and after each camper group.Assists with trail upkeep and repair.Activity Area Support:Assists with the facilitation of activity programs including Camptivities (camper-chosen week-long activities), Cabin Groups, and Fun Swim (free choice time) as assigned by the Junior Staff Unit Leader.Assists with general horse care as deemed appropriate by the Wrangler.Supports keeping areas clean and organized before, during, and after each camper group.Reports any unsafe area conditions or camper or staff situations to the activity specialist immediately.ADDITIONAL DUTIESWith guidance from the J-Staff Unit Leader, plans and facilitates camp programming such as an evening program and morning reflection.If necessary, be open to stepping into a cabin as a co-counselor for a traditional camp cabin (J-Staff are not permitted to solely supervise campers without a Camp Echo staff member 18 years or older).Be staffed as bus staff, being an active member of the bus departure and arrival process at the Y and then actively supervising and providing guidance and appropriate correction as necessary to campers at the discretion of the Bus Captain. (All staff, including J-Staff are not on their phones or using headphones/reading, etc. while on paid bus duty).J-Staff do not participate in Layover programming between camper sessions and are assigned bus duty to and from camp each session, even if returning for the next.QUALIFICATIONS:Current 11th grader in high school or finished at least 3 years of high school â age 16 or older.First Aid/CPR/AED certified.Lifeguard preferred.Leadership ability and teamwork oriented.Possess a variety of skills, experience, and desire working with youth.A commitment to working with a diverse staff and camper population for the fulfillment of YMCA goals.RESPONSIBILITIES OF ALL CAMP ECHO STAFF:Models, teaches, and upholds the Camp Echo Code of Conduct and protects the well-being of all campers and staff.Reports any behavior that goes against the Camp Echo Code of Conduct and/or puts any camper or staff at emotional or physical risk.Aids in the development and education of Teen Leadership program participants.Maintains positive relationships with campers and other staff.Encourages physical, emotional, and spiritual growth and positive character development in all campers.Practices cultural humility, striving to actively learn about and be sensitive to cultures different than their own.Is a team player, helping others to achieve their potential by enthusiastically saying yes  when asked to help.Takes initiative and strives to be an active participant in creating positive programs and spaces at camp.Cares for and maintains any program equipment, supplies, and spaces they use including activity areas (keeping track of keys) and any shared spaces like the offices, Costume Closet and Program Office.Handles whatever else is necessary to ensure that programs run smoothly and safely, or anything else that is deemed necessary by supervisors.May be scheduled to work in-between sessions on at least one occasion to support the transition between groups.All summer positions require living on-site at Camp Echo in Fremont, Michigan. Depending on position hired, staff members live in camper or staff cabins during employment.
