Position Description:
  • The head wrestling coach will be responsible for the development, organization and implementation of the entire wrestling program, as well as in the provision of leadership to wrestling personnel and student athletes.
  • The coach must adhere to all LHSAA assigned district, Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) and the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) rules and regulations relative to the wrestling program.
  • Work day consists of time, after completion of the school day, necessary to adequately prepare the coach's team for competition.
  • Also, he/she must sometimes work weekends and holidays as determined by the preparedness of his/her team.
Security Statement:
  • The coach must maintain security of electronic and print records with regard to confidentiality of student information and passwords that are issued for access to databases.
Scope of Responsibility:
  • Provides overall supervision of the wrestling program within the guidelines of the LHSAA assigned district, JPPSS, LHSAA policies, rules and regulations.
  • Assigns the duties of other coaches working in wrestling.
  • Maintains, issues, inventories and orders all new equipment.
  • Maintains all records specified by the LHSAA and JPPSS.
  • Scheduling games and relative activities pertaining to wrestling.
  • Builds sportsmanship as well as provides good public relations in the school and community.
  • Ensures all student athletes have a current physical exam.
  • Ensures that all student athletes have adequate insurance coverage as specified by the JPPSS and the LHSAA, and that proper documentation on each student signed by the parent / legal guardian to purchase or decline extra insurance exists.
  • Keeps the principal and faculty informed of departure times for trips as well as ensures that all participants have transportation home when returning from road trips.
  • Sets the criteria for lettering and explains that criteria to all participants and parents. Maintains team statistics.
  • Participates in professional development through workshops, literature, clinics and seminars.
  • Acquires thirty-six (36) Continuing Learning Units (CLUs) per year (July 1 through June 30).
  • Adheres to Parish and State requirements for promptly reporting rosters, schedules, scores, eligibility or documentation of incidents or injuries.
  • Cooperates, communicates and works with the school based athletic director and administrator in charge of athletics.
  • Evaluates assistant coaches that he/she supervises.
  • Performs all duties as assigned by the principal and or appropriate administrator.
  • 2 Skills and Qualifications:
  • The coach must be able to communicate in Standard English, both orally and in writing and or digitally.
  • Must have the ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system and be able to communicate successfully and tactfully with students, parents and school personnel while following JPPSS policies.
  • The coach must accurately communicate with members of the media.
  • The coach must be able to represent the school and or school system at various functions.
  • The coach must be able to accurately compile and access data, summarize information and provide written reports to his/her supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate, CECP completion and/or current LHSAA requirements Possess a CDL class B or above with a P and S endorsement free of air brake restrictions.
  • Meet all requirements of the Louisiana Department of Education school bus driver component.
  • Employment with the Jefferson Parish Public School System as a teacher and/or administrator. Must meet the requirements in Article 3.3 (Faculty Coaches) of the LHSAA handbook.
  • Demonstrated expertise, knowledge and competency in basic wrestling fundamentals.
  • Professional knowledge of LHSAA and JPPSS rules and regulations for wrestling.
  • Expertise, knowledge and competency in conditioning of athletes sport specific.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Previous playing experience in wrestling preferred (on college or university level; minimum experience on high school level).
  • Previous coaching experience on the junior varsity, junior high/middle school or other recreation activity level in wrestling.
  • Expertise, knowledge and competency in first aid for the prevention and treatment of wrestling injuries.
Physical Involvement:
  • Standing, running, walking, reaching, bending and lifting is required. Must be able to demonstrate athletic techniques and physically transfer or position athletes as required. He/she must be able to move heavy athletic equipment.
  • Ability to provide own transportation to games, work locations and meeting sites.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
