The Whitlock lab (Whitlocklab.com) in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a research technician to join our team. In the Whitlock Lab, we love and learn from the multinucleated cell types that manage the life-long development and maintenance of the musculoskeletal system. The technician will work closely with the PI and other lab members to complete various cell biological and biochemical experiments in support our ongoing, long-term research projects aimed at resolving how osteoclasts form and how their dysfunction leads to the development of pediatric and geriatric skeletal diseases. The candidate will be expected to independently perform and execute successful experiments, and to perform routine lab maintenance and organization. This position is ideal for graduating seniors looking to take a 1-2 gap year and accrue extensive research experience before pursuing graduate school.
The successful candidate must have a Associates degree in biology, or a related field, and at least one year of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student. Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills. Preference will be given to candidates with cell culture and/or mouse husbandry/genotyping experience.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES
* Responsible for laboratory maintenance and upkeep, including: ordering, stocking, organizing, and maintaining an inventory of supplies, preparing stock solutions, maintaining equipment, and maintaining a clean laboratory space
* Perform experimental procedures based on objectives and designs by Dr. Whitlock, including but not limited to: immunoblotting, PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, molecular biology/recombinant DNA, cell culture, protein and RNA isolation, and confocal microscopy.
* Assist in training other lab members on experimental procedures
* Maintain and organized and detailed lab notebook, tabulated experimental results, and reagent inventory
* Prepare summary figures and presentations of results
* Attend and participate in lab meetings
* In addition to the above responsibilities, other duties may be assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Associates Degree in biology, or a related field
Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work requiring finer finger manipulation.
