Lab Assistant - 20 hrs - Afternoons - - Henry Ford Health System : Job Details

GENERAL SUMMARY:Under regular supervision, and according to established procedures, performs a varietyof routine laboratory support procedures including order entry, specimen/material pickup, transportation, tracking, receipt, and processing. May utilize a variety of informationsystems to perform tasks. Operates and maintains pre and post analytic laboratoryequipment which may include laboratory automation. May perform occasionalphlebotomy service if required at that site. Interacts with patients, laboratory staff andcaregivers in a courteous and professional manner.PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Prepares patient specimens for laboratory testing with particular emphasis on preanalytic and post-analytic processes2. Accurately enters patient demographic, insurance, and test order information intovariety of computer information systems according to standard protocols in a timelymanner. Maintains confidentiality of patient information3. Reviews laboratory request forms for complete and accurate demographic and orderentry information. Resolves and documents discrepancies as needed. Organizesand maintains storage of laboratory submission forms per protocol4. Exercises care in specimen handling, preparation, storage, and order entry toprotect the identify and integrity of samples5. Performs and records maintenance for pre and post analytic laboratory equipment.Equipment includes specimen barcode label printers, freezers, refrigerators,centrifuges, glassware cleaning equipment, autoclaves as well as pre and postanalytic laboratory automation system as neededEDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:1. High school graduate or equivalent required2. Strong computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite or similar software3. Experience in a medical setting, hospital or clinic laboratory preferred4. Familiarity with medical terminology and human anatomy preferred5. Candidate with college-level course work in science preferred
