Job Summary
Performs tasks of a more complex nature which require some training and semi-independent knowledge of the job. Positions are typically administrative or technical in nature and may involve the application of moderate skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities will typically involve more work variety, technical competence, and a moderate degree of independent judgment and responsibility for tasks such as drafting correspondence, preparing reports or spreadsheets, and conducting basic research, etc. This position requires a moderate level of contact with internal and external customers. The ability to work as a team member is necessary. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Assists the Lab Manager with Engineering and Computer lab operational needs.
Makes on-campus deliveries as required by the Lab Manager.
Assists students, faculty, and staff as needed.
Maintains and update bulletin boards in the department.
Assists with the maintenance/repair of items in the department as directed by the Lab Manager.
Assists in the maintenance the repair log.
Performs safety audit of labs as directed and report findings to Lab Manager.
Prepares reports, spreadsheets, and other electronic documents as needed for the department.
Keeps work areas clean and neat at all times, including office and lab areas.
Assists with maintenance of electronic file storage system and physical file storage system for manuals and other technical information associated with department equipment.
Performs other duties as requested by the Lab Manager, faculty, or Associate Dean of the department.
Minimum Requirements
Must be a current MSU student
Must maintain satisfactory academic progress
Must feel comfortable performing tasks that are not routine, but rather are more complex in nature
Must have the ability to understand and to follow written and verbal instructions
Must be able to work somewhat independently, utilizing initiative and a moderate level of judgment, analytical and/or decision-making skills
Must be able to operate a variety of office equipment such as copier, telephone, etc.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Familiarity with an office/lab environment and basic computer skills.
Must have strong communication skills.
Must have a willingness to be flexible and motivated to take on tasks as needed.
Must be willing to seek out assistance when needed.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
Must have organizational skills.
Knowledge related to the School of Engineering and Computer Science preferred.
Physical Requirements Working Conditions
The departmental labs/offices are productive work environments with frequent interruptions due to student, faculty, staff, and visitor requirements that may occur at any time. The Lab Assistant must show patience and maturity when dealing with people as they are a direct representative of the department.
