II. POSITION SUMMARY:Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager and/or Medical Technologist, the Laboratory Assistant performs phlebotomy/specimen collection, processes clinical specimens and prepares these for clinical laboratory analysis; also assists in the performance of automated and semi-automated laboratory tests within limitations set by the law and in the internal documentation of test runs and dispersal of test results.III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs phlebotomy on patients, processes clinical specimens and prepares these for clinical laboratory analysis.
  • Translates physician orders to laboratory requests and determines if corrections are needed and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Makes reviews and corrects logbook entries and requisitions; prepares paperwork for send-outs to reference laboratory; charts patient results and documents transmittal of these results in the appropriate log; notifies physician of critical results through telephone; faxes results or other laboratory paper; documents work performed on specimens.
  • Corrects order and charges on patient billings.
  • Performs some laboratory procedures within limitations set by the law.
  • Maintains, distributes and organizes supply inventory, monitoring expiration dates
  • Performs other related duties assigned and requested.
RequirementsIV. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:High school graduate with college preparation related to office or managerial organization preferred has completed the required coursework for phlebotomy and has passed a phlebotomy certification exam with appropriate license from the State. Minimum of 2 year experience as a phlebotomist/lab assistant is preferred.V.
