Summary:
Accurately handles and processes all laboratory specimens, ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures. Data entry duties consist of entering patient, client, billing, and test information into the internal LIS and external reference laboratory systems.
Position Reports To: Reports to Laboratory Manager
Essential Functions:
Proficient in all functions of the Laboratory Assistant I position.Determines specimen acceptability, consulting with specimen processing lead, technologist, or pathologist as needed and taking appropriate action when necessary.Retrieve specimens from refrigerator/freezer for repeat testing (i.e. Add on testing and missing specimens).Documents and attempts to resolve issues with problem specimens.Calls patients and healthcare providers in response to problem specimens. Reorders testing in Epic if appropriate.Orders testing for reference labs in external reference lab systems (i.e. Mayo access, Quest, ect.).Prepares specimens to transport to reference labs.Ensures that Customer Service Actions are completed in a timely manner.Assists in orientation and training of new employees in specimen processing.If trained in Pathology Lab Assistant duties performs all essential functions of this job including front office and slide filing.Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.Other duties as assigned.Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School diploma required
- Complete specimen processing training.
- Medical Assistant Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification.
Desired:
- One years experience as a clinical lab assistant.
