I. Job Summary

Ensures the safe and efficient daily operation of the landfill laboratory.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned by the manager.

  • Manages all laboratory personnel, data, and quality control in compliance with facility SSPs and SSMPs.
  • Makes independent decisions in accordance with standard laboratory practices and in accordance with the facility SSPs and SSMPs documents.
  • Implements waste analysis plan and RCRA regulations as it pertains to laboratory analysis and testing.
  • Reviews waste acceptance packets to determine acceptability for on-site or off-site hazardous waste management.
  • Performs laboratory functions as required.
  • Facilitates the receipt of wastes for treatment and disposal in compliance with the facility's permit, state and federal regulations and WM policies and procedures.
  • Advises site management on appropriate treatment and disposal methodologies to be utilized at the facility for the specific waste.
  • Oversees personnel needs of the laboratory including selecting, coaching, and training employees and evaluating employee performance. Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
  • Works with other operations supervisors/managers to coordinate services and keep them informed as issues arise.
  • Keeps facility management fully informed of all problems or matters requiring their attention.
  • Makes personal contact with customers and assists them with questions and/or concerns as appropriate.
  • Ensures employee health and safety, cleanliness and organization of laboratory work area and related storage areas.
  • Conducts and/or attends and contributes to regular meetings to maintain favorable working relationships among facility employees and staff.
  • Provides training and presentations as needed in a positive and professional manner.
  • Updates and submits required reports in a timely manner.
  • Facilitates internal and external Lab audits and finding resolution
  • Calibration and maintenance of lab instruments, utilizing a laboratory information management system, and other tasks as required.
  • Assists and advises staff in waste discrepancy resolution
  • Performs other duties as assigned by manager
  • Ability to complete 24 hour HAZWOPER course.
  • Ability to pass pulmonary function test and use respirator
  • Bi-lingual English and Spanish
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate employees

III. Supervisory Responsibilities

Active oversight and supervision of hourly, temporary, contract, and salaried employees as assigned.

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited) in Chemistry, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four years of relevant work experience.

Experience: Seven years of relevant work experience (in addition to education requirement).

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
