Job Description
The Food Analysis Laboratory Control Center (FALCC) in the Virginia Tech Department of Biochemistry seeks an experienced analytical chemist to perform quantitative analysis of nutrients and other components in foods according to established Standard Operating Procedures, in a high throughput laboratory. Other duties include maintaining documentation, compiling and reporting results; Performing general laboratory cleanup and organization; Preparing food samples using blending equipment according to established Standard Operating Procedures; Assisting as needed with sample login using Access database; Sample inventory; Utilization of electronic records for sample tracking/organization/updates; Assisting with shipments of subsamples to contract laboratories; and any other related tasks required by the sponsor.
Required Qualifications
Minimum B.S. degree in chemistry, food science and technology, biochemistry, or equivalent training and experience; hands-on experience working in an analytical chemistry or similar laboratory performing quantitative analysis of organic compounds in biological samples, preferably foods, using wet chemical extraction techniques and precise measurements of mass and volume and standard laboratory equipment to achieve precise quantitative results. Must be detail oriented with the ability to follow instructions and SOPs but work relatively independently to accomplish assigned tasks, be competent with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), and have strong oral/written English communication skills. Must be able to work around all types of foods, including but not limited to dairy, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soy.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience preparing/homogenizing a wide variety of food samples for quantitative analysis of nutrients. Working full time in a high throughput laboratory performing quantitative analysis of food components. Experience performing quantitative analysis using GC and HPLC; experience with mass spectrometry; competence with statistical analysis software.
