JOB TITLE: Laborer I PW18/NE05 DEPARTMENT: Public Works, City of Waycross JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing general street maintenance and repair duties. WORKING HOURS: Employees will be required to start work at 7:00 AM and work until 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. Employees will also get a half-hour lunch break that starts at 12:00 (Noon) and ends at 12:30 PM. MAJOR DUTIES: Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Operates landscape maintenance equipment to mow and trim rights-of-way and clear overgrown brush, which may include a riding mower, push mower, weed eater, hole diggers, power and manual hedge trimmers, and other equipment.
- Trims trees and hedges; operates a chainsaw to remove trees as needed.
- Rakes leaves and shovels debris.
- Applies herbicides along rights-of-way.
- Clears drainage pipes.
- Picks up litter and trash along city streets and at city facilities.
- Provides routine maintenance of landscaping equipment by performing such duties as checking oil and fluid levels and sharpening blades.
- Assigned calls on a rotational basis.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of city and safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of ground maintenance techniques.
- Skill in operating and maintaining ground maintenance equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, blowers, sprayers, chainsaws, and tillers.
- Skill in using various hand and power tools.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: None GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department and safety rules, regulations, and work orders. COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related street and grounds maintenance duties. SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to maintain city streets and grounds. Successful performance helps ensure safe, attractive landscapes and rights-of-way and enhances the public image of the city. PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the public. PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is mainly performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience in understanding the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
