Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Laborer. As a Laborer for WCRC you will perform manual labor in the operation of light trucks and motorized equipment to repair and maintain state trunklines, county primary/local roads and right-of-way. The laborer position is an entry level position and the successful applicant will be required to complete CDL training within one year. Schedule
- Winter schedule: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with potential for overtime. May be required to work double shifts for up to 16 hours in winter storm events.
- Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with potential for overtime.
- In the summer months, this position will be assigned to our sign crew and will be responsible for installing and maintaining signs and traffic control devices in accordance with state, federal and local regulations.
- Required to be on call 24 hours, 7 days/week due to weather conditions.

- Operates trucks and equipment in the performance of winter maintenance operations.
- Performs manual labor; digs ditches; cleans and installs culverts; removes debris from roadway and shoulders; loads and unloads tools, equipment and materials.
- Serves as traffic regulator on road maintenance crews; directs traffic around hazards or crews in the roadway; sets out temporary road signs, traffic cones and barricades at work sites.
- Operates trucks, trailers and related equipment; hauls and dumps road maintenance and repair materials, including asphalt, rock, liquid asphalt, dirt and culvert pipes; loads and transports road equipment.
- Operates chain saw, skid steer, chipper and related equipment to remove and/or trim fallen and existing trees and brush.
- Performs pre-trip/post-trip inspections, minor servicing, adjustment and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Performs crack seal operations that involve guiding emulsion wands over cracks in the roadway; fills cracks with hot bituminous emulsion and shovels stone chips from back of vehicle.
- Keeps assigned vehicles and equipment clean, orderly and equipped with necessary tools and supplies.
- Records materials, supplies, time and equipment used for each work project for proper billing or record keeping.
REQUIREMENTS
- Desirable up to one (1) year of experience in highway maintenance, highway or building construction, farming, forestry or landscaping or any labor intensive work experience that directly involves the skills required to operate machinery, small tools, power tools, vehicles and equipment.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid Michigan Driver's License.
- Ability to provide 24-hour on-call services.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, physical and Human Performance Evaluation (HPE). The HPE will require the applicant to demonstrate their ability to execute the essential physical demands of the position outlined in the job description.
