- Operates heavy equipment necessary for landfill operations; maintains equipment in a clean and functional operating condition.
- Operates water truck to perform dust control and fire suppression activities as required.
- Operates gatehouse; utilizes automated scale system; calculates and collects amount due for waste loads.
- Directs vehicle traffic at the landfill.
- Maintains landfill shop, catch fences, and buildings.
- Performs snow removal as required.
- Performs basic clean-up of site and facilities as required.
- Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports using a computer; reviews such reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required; operates standard office equipment.
- Observes safe working practices, including maintaining work areas in a safe condition.
- Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as a member of a work team.
- Keeps basic records of work performed, time sheets, etc.

Typical QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.Education and Experience:High school diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement within 18 months of hire
- Must take pre-employment physical examination and Respiratory Fit test

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:Under Immediate Supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work with the exception of routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory re-view.PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT:The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
