White Plains Hospital Job DescriptionTitle: Lead MedicalTechnologist-Chemistry Job Code: 500306Department/Location: Department ofLaboratories FLSA Status: NEReports to: Chemistry/Immunology SupervisorPosition SummaryWorks under the supervision of the Chemistry Supervisor. Applies broad practical and theoretical knowledge of Clinical Chemistry, Immunology and Special Chemistry in the activities of the Chemistry Laboratory. Is a resource person for the technologists in the department. Performs other duties as assigned.Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following: TECHNICAL:
  • Analyze blood, body fluids and urine specimens according to the established procedures of the Chemistry Department.
  • Evaluates test results for abnormalities and/or significant variations and confirms and/or corrects before releasing.
  • Notifies appropriate patient care areas of critical and STAT results.
  • Assist technologists with instrument malfunction when necessary.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new products and procedures.
  • Assists with staff training.
  • Complies with all regulatory standards.
  • Consults with pathologists, staff physicians and other hospital personnel as necessary.
  • Assists supervisory staff with the Glucose Point of Care program.
  • MANAGERIAL:The following duties may be required to be performed routinely, in the absence of supervisory staff, or at the request of supervisory staff or Laboratory Administrative Director.
  • Payroll time keeping
  • Assist with proper processing of NYS and CAP Proficiency programs.
  • Write/revise department procedures and protocols in conjunction with the laboratory supervisor.
  • Demonstrate intuitive planning and follow-up of projects.
  • Inform Supervisory staff and appropriate personnel of situations or problems requiring attention. Demonstrate ability to recognize and analyze problems effectively.
  • Maintain inventory for all chemistry supplies, submits purchase requests as applicable.
  • Assist with Quality Control programs and evaluation.
  • Contribute toward maintaining a pleasant working atmosphere within the department.
  • Notifies appropriate patient care areas of results and or problems.
  • Participates in external (NYS and CAP) and internal proficiency testing.
  • Responsible for QC as assigned.
  • Escalates non-conformances, adverse events and unusual occurrences to leadership
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Education & Experience Requirements
    • New York State Clinical Technologist license required.
    • B.S. degree in Clinical Technology or related science with four years of relevant laboratory experience.
    • ASCP certification preferred.

    • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
    • Must be able to remain stationary for extended/prolonged periods
    • Must be able to detect sounds and respond to emergency sounds/signals at all times
    • Must be able to constantly operate computer, equipment and other devices
    • Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruptions and attend to tasks for more than sixty (60) minutes at a time.
