Position and Salary

The Attorney General's Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Office Assistant in the Spokane General Services Division. This position is located in Spokane, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).

Salary range: $38,004 - $50,328. The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:

  • Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend.
  • Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

About the Spokane Division:

The Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Division provides legal services in Eastern Washington to many agencies and institutions of state government. Currently, the Division houses staff that represent various departments and institutions, including the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), Department of Social & Health Services (DSHS), Labor & Industries, Department of Transportation, Department of Licensing, Employment Security Department (ESD), Department of Corrections, and several institutions of higher education.

The work of the Spokane Division is exceptional, and our staff understands that each case we handle is significant to the parties involved. We are proud of the work we do and the communities we serve on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General.

Duties and Essential Functions of a Legal Office Assistant:

  • Receives service of legal documents and routes to the appropriate party.
  • Performs delivery/messenger services such as serving and filing legal documents and obtaining signatures to meet critical deadlines.
  • Processes and routes incoming and outgoing mail and other special deliveries distinguishing between legal and general correspondence/documents.
  • Monitors division electronic mailboxes per agency and division protocols and policies; Receives and screens clients and the public by phone and in person.
  • Assists with answers to basic or routine questions; directs them to the appropriate resources.
  • Photocopies and scans documents ensuring exact duplication of originals.
  • Numbers and assembles legal documents, evidence, exhibits, and other materials as directed.
  • Performs data entry functions and retrieves documents from legal databases.
  • Prepares and processes vendor, travel or expense vouchers and expert agreements in conformance with agency-established coding system and fiscal procedures.
  • Makes travel arrangements and vehicle reservations.
  • Maintains inventory and tracks supplies following office protocols and procedures; schedules and prepares conference rooms for meetings.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Qualifications:

  • Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of six months of experience in a legal office environment.
  • Option 2: One year of legal office experience.
  • Option 3: A combination of two years of college education and/or relevant experience.
  • Option 4: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study.

Skills and Abilities:Customer service, detail-oriented, multitasking, and previous general office experience.
