The Financial Services Institute's (FSI) Legislative Affairs Manager supports the AVP of Legislative Affairs in developing and implementing FSI's federal legislative affairs program that supports FSI's mission of creating a healthier, more business-friendly regulatory environment for independent financial advisors and firms as well as ensuring Main Street Americans have access to affordable, professional financial advice, products and services. Key responsibilities include tracking and analyzing relevant federal legislation, attending congressional hearings and industry coalition meetings, and representing and advocating for FSI's interests with Congress and federal agencies. The position involves extensive interaction with FSI members, policymakers, and outside vendors. This is a hybrid position requiring some in-office meetings and the ability to attend meetings on Capitol Hill.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and executing FSI's federal legislative advocacy goals.
  • Represent and advocate for FSI's interests with Congress, federal agencies, coalitions, and other organizations.
  • Track and analyze relevant federal legislation, attends congressional hearings and industry coalition meetings.
  • Draft persuasive briefing materials to educate and inform Members of Congress and their staff.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Members of Congress and their staff
  • Assist in planning and executing successful member roundtables and fly-in events.
  • Participate in regular efforts to keep FSI members informed about and engaged in our advocacy efforts. This includes issuing calls to action for FSI members to engage their Members of Congress on important advocacy priority issues.
  • Collaborate with advocacy priority teams to achieve FSI's advocacy goals.
  • Collaborate with advocacy and political engagement teams to execute advocacy strategies.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to FSI's core values, including: Results, Integrity, Collaboration, Balance, and Growth.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's or Law degree preferred) and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Significant legislative and/or government affairs experience, preferably related to the financial services industry.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory requirements and structures that impact independent financial services firms and independent financial advisors.
  • Comprehensive understanding of and experience with the legislative process, political environment, and policy outreach.
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to think strategically.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to roll up one's sleeves to get the job done.
  • Skilled at working effectively with cross-functional teams in a matrix organization.
  • Ability to embrace the effective use of technology to advance advocacy efforts, operate effectively, preserve institutional knowledge, and promote efficiency.

Essential Job Functions & Working Conditions

  • Represent FSI members' interests and advocate for their concerns.
  • Assist the AVP of Legislative Affairs and the Advocacy Team in developing advocacy strategies and implementing tactical plans to achieve the objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a network of congressional, political, trade association, policymaker, and other stakeholder contacts.
  • Engage our members in our advocacy initiatives.
  • Communicate the goals and benefits of our advocacy efforts to key stakeholders.
  • Travel as necessary to perform job functions effectively (no more than 10% of time).
