Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the part-time position of Bookmobile Specialist. The preferred starting salary for this position is $16.45 Hourly. This is a regular part-time, non-exempt position requiring 26 hours a week and is eligible for pro-rated benefits.

This position performs responsible work providing Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JRML) Bookmobile and Outreach Services, under the general supervision of the Bookmobile and Outreach Services Manager.

* Operates vehicle on a predetermined route to deliver books and other library materials in JMRL service area on a regular basis, including daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

* Brings vehicle and provides library service at community engagement events.

* Checks in/out library materials from patron accounts by scanning barcode and either placing on cart for shelving, placing on hold shelf, or setting in bin for transit. Determines if returned item is damaged and if fine needs to be placed on patron accounts.

* Provides reader's advisory and reference services for patrons.

* Organizes and maintains library materials, including sorting, shelving, and shifting, pick list and holds shelf maintenance.

* Safely performs all functions associated with operating the bookmobile.

* Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.

* Regular and reliable attendance

* Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

* Bachelor's degree.

OR

* Associate's degree and 2 years of related experience.

OR

* High School diploma or GED and 4 years of related experience.

OR

* An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Preferred:

* Previous experience working with the public in a customer service environment.

* Experience with computers.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

* Valid Virginia driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.

* Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

Job Knowledge:

* Knowledge of computer hardware and other technology associated with the circulation of library materials and the ability to troubleshoot.

* Knowledge of library policies and procedures.

* Knowledge of mobile library operations, including safe handling of the bookmobile.

* Knowledge of safe vehicle operation and applicable federal, state, and local driving laws.

* Knowledge of basic routine and preventative vehicle maintenance (e.g., tire pressure, oil changes) to maintain vehicle readiness.

* Knowledge of Charlottesville, VA, and surrounding areas, including common delivery routes, traffic patterns, and local roadways to ensure efficient and timely deliveries.

Reading:

* Intermediate: ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, magazines, journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.

Writing:

* Basic: ability to write simple letters, paragraphs and sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.

Math:

* Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Communication Skills:

* Basic: Provide standard information to and interacts with others outside direct reporting relationships on procedures or general policies. Interaction requires recognizing different points of view to ensure understanding and appropriate response. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers and customers.

Independence and Decision-Making:

* Requires General Direction: Normally performs the job by following general instructions or established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is some discretion when making decisions among a few easily identifiable choices of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance is reviewed frequently.

Technical Skills:

* Basic: Uses standard technical skills appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. May need entry level skill in Word, Excel and/or departmental software. Demonstrated ability to safely perform all functions associated with operating the bookmobile.

Fiscal Responsibilities:

* No budgetary/fiscal responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

* No responsibility for direction or supervision of others.

Physical Demands:

* Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

* Ability to climb on and off of vehicles several times a day.

* Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

* Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

* Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:

* Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; operates specialized vehicle delivering books, including use of an accessible lift; and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.

* Responsible for the vehicle(s)/equipment assigned.

Work Environment:

* Work is typically performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time, monitor glare and dust.

* Work is also performed in a vehicle, traveling around the JMRL service area, where employee may be exposed to all weather and vehicle conditions.

* The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
