Job Description: The position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections and Archives. The Library Assistant provides essential customer service at the library's front desk and in the Special Collections and Archives reading room. Responsibilities include checking in and out library materials, assisting patrons in following library procedures, and answering general inquiries. The successful candidate will be trained on common library software (Alma, Aeon, and Tipasa) and can work on projects that support the library's mission.The University Library is committed to the development of an inclusive environment and we strive to advance diverse perspectives and approaches in carrying out the mission of Washington and Lee University.Essential Functions:
  • Leyburn Library Public Services
  • Assist in providing friendly, timely, and courteous customer service to patrons and visitors at the Leyburn Library information desk and Special Collections and Archives reading room.
  • Oversee the reading room to ensure the security of collection materials being used by researchers, while providing guidance and assistance in adhering to reading room procedures.
  • Answer routine directional questions and triage research questions to the appropriate faculty librarian.
  • Shelf and retrieve library materials such as physical books, DVDs, or other materials.
  • Serves as additional support for interlibrary loan lending operation and works with Access Services Supervisor on special projects.
  • Assist with high-end academic printing for Washington and Lee University students, faculty, and staff during periods of high volume.
  • As needed, performs routine troubleshooting of library computers, printers, and other hardware/software.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Special Collections and Archives and/or the University Librarian
Work Schedule: The position supports two departments, and the work schedule will be based on the needs of both organizations during the academic year. The tentative schedule is Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., with 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. for Special Collections and Archives, and 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. for the Leyburn Information Desk.Summer hours will vary depending on the needs of the departments and supervisors. The library's summer hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday/Closed weekends. Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required and experience within a library setting is preferred.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Regular and on time attendance is mandatory.
  • Proficient computer skills including the ability to email, scan, and work in MS Office programs and knowledge of or the ability to learn several software systems and/or packages.
  • An aptitude for details, a good public service attitude, and an ability to work independently are required.
