The focus of this position is helping customers at the branch library. This position contributes innovative and progressive solutions to provide increasingly better customer service.Hours can include days, evenings, and weekends. Additional hours to attend meetings, workshops or to fill in for other staff may be required.QUALIFICATIONS:Associate's degree, with two years of experience in a public library or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.Personal Characteristics:Patron focusedAccurateDetail orientedInnovativeOrganizedSelf-starterLifelong learnerStrong analytical skillsGood problem solverTechnically savvyTeam orientedComfortable working in a multi-tasking environmentEnjoys working with diverse populationsUnderstands the role of the library in its communityEXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:Meets and greets customers.Assists customers in identifying, locating, checking in and out materials, collecting fines and related charges.Issues library cards to customers.Searches library catalog in answer to customers' questions and places holds for customers as requested.Interprets, explains, and enforces library policies and procedures to public as appropriate.Provides basic reference assistance to customers.Assists customers with the computers and Internet.Monitors severe weather radio, makes announcements to the public concerning severe weather warnings/watches, and carries out procedures for severe weather events.Pulls requested materials from shelves using reports.Unpacks materials coming into the library.Checks in materials received by the library.May plan and present programs.Takes responsibility for managing the development of one's own career, including a commitment to lifelong learning and periodic retooling of personal skills set.Carries out policies, procedures, and practices of the Marathon County Public Library.Balances daily receipts from fines and fees; maintains and reconciles cash account.Attends workshops and meetings; reads book reviews, library journals and professional literature and periodicals to maintain current professional knowledge and abilities.Answers telephone calls, takes, and relays messages.Develops and maintains positive relationships with staff and patrons.Maintains regular and predictable attendance; works extra hours as required.Performs related work as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:Thoroughly enjoys working with the public.Enjoys presenting programs to groups of people.Ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as co-workers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.Ability to communicate orally and in writing with patrons, library staff, students, volunteers, and community organizations.Ability to process, calculate, compute, and sum numbers and/or information.
