The preferred starting salary for this position is $21.03 Hourly and $43,742.40 Annually. This position performs professional managerial duties by overseeing system-wide receiving and processing of library materials and assisting in the maintenance of the integrated library system database for the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL). Work is performed under the limited direction of the Technical Services Manager.   • Provides cataloging and processing services and other assistance region-wide to library staff.
  • Supervises, coaches, trains, motivates, and evaluates the performance of staff and volunteers; interviews, selects, assigns work, and administers disciplinary action to subordinate employees in accordance with established personnel policy and procedures. Establishes professional standards for work quality, quantity, performance, and accountability.
  • Manages support staff, assists in the coordination and workflow between departments, and performs all functions associated with opening/closing daily department operations.
  • Assists with complex problems and or situations and provides technical expertise.
  • Oversees and participates in the maintenance of the item database with a focus on processing materials.
  • Edits and creates original metadata records for library materials using specialized software, encoding standards, and descriptive standards.
  • Manages department workflow in cooperation with cataloging, acquisitions, and collections staff. Monitors the cataloging queue and the processing queue and makes adjustments to workflow based on situational and seasonal needs. Expediates materials based on staff requests, upcoming programs, or other situational needs.
  • Addresses requests from staff in other departments ranging from updating the processing of physical materials, changing database records, or special projects.
  • Manages equipment and supply inventory of specialist team by performing supply spot checks and evaluating when new equipment would improve processing.
  • Reports statistics.
  • Utilizes computer hardware/software applications to prepare attractive and accurate spine labels, item stickers, and item inserts.
  • Manages branch/department in absence of manager including scheduling, monitoring staff duties, attending meetings, and preparing paperwork.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
Education, Experience and Skills Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
  • Eligibility for professional certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia within the first 2 years of employment, AND 3 years of library work experience, including cataloging and processing of library materials.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: Job Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of professional library work including best practices of cataloging and classifying all formats of library materials.
  • Knowledge of integrated library system software and digital cataloging.
  • Knowledge of MARC records.
  • Knowledge of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2).
  • Knowledge of Resource Description and Cataloging (RDA).
  • Knowledge of and ability to use library's print and electronic resources.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement library policies and procedures associated with the item database and integrated library system.
  • Knowledge of computer databases used in cataloging library materials.
  • Knowledge of circulation computer hardware and other technology associated with circulation of library materials and the ability to troubleshoot.
Reading:
  • Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, magazines, journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.
Writing:
  • Intermediate: Ability to write reports, prepare materials such as business letters, explanations, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Math:
  • Intermediate: ability to deal with number systems; simple formulas, practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement.
Communication Skills:
  • Intermediate: Ability to develop effective relationships with coworkers and others. Contacts that may involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
Independence and Decision-Making:
  • Requires Limited Direction: normally completes work according to their own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance occasionally. Special projects are managed with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.
Technical Skills:
  • Skilled: comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office applications and/or departmental software.
