Library Page needed to work 12 hours per week at the City of Port Townsend Public Library. No medical benefits, but accrues 1 hour of sick time per 40 hours worked & able to access City's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Work schedule is 3-7 p.m. Thursdays, 1-5 p.m. Fridays, and 1-5 p.m. Saturdays. JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, performs a wide range of basic manual library work such as sorting, moving, shelving, locating, and retrieving library materials, keeping the shelves in good order and customer service-related functions to ensure library materials are available for patron usage. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Shelving, sorting, filing, and retrieving books, periodicals and media, packing and unpacking shipments of library materials, processing shipments for circulation, and repairing and mending library materials.
  • Retrieve, sort and shelve books and other library materials alpha-numerically, read and reorganize shelves for correct placement of materials and process newspapers. Property stamp, list, shelve and remove dated newspaper copies.
  • Check-in returned library materials, empty book drops, and process received shipments.
  • Assist with filling holds by searching shelves for requested items and using the Integrated Library System (ILS) to locate and process items.
  • Process books, media, donated materials, and other new library materials for circulation.
  • Provides patron assistance in locating specific collection materials or direct them to specialists within the library for assistance.
  • Provide general assistance to patrons in the use of library equipment in the public services area and provide directional information, as requested.
  • Assist in preparing the library for opening or closing, including securing windows and doors, turning electronic equipment on or off and fill machines with paper.
  • Perform minor service of library equipment, clean monitors, and clear paper misfeeds. Straighten library materials to maintain an organized and orderly appearance.
  • May check out library materials, collect and receive fines and issue new library cards on a relief basis at the circulation desk
  • May assist in promoting programs, information, services, and materials by setting up displays; set-up, take-down furniture and efficiently maintain patron areas.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to provide excellent, efficient customer service to all patrons, library staff and volunteers, in a fast-paced public environment.
  • Ability to perform a highly physical job for 3-5 hours at a time.
  • Ability to sort and file alphanumerically and to perform basic mathematical computations, including ability to navigate the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and perform required data entry accurately and timely.
  • Ability to establish priorities and organize workload.
  • Ability to work independently for long periods of time and maintain concentration needed to accurately file and shelve library materials.
  • Ability to learn basic circulation functions in the ILS.
  • Ability to access and utilize staff Intranet resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written or oral procedural instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work a schedule that may change periodically, including evenings and weekends. Willingness to being flexible to meet the needs of PTPL.
QUALIFICATIONSRequired
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
Preferred
  • Experience in a service-oriented environment preferred.
  • Experience performing high detailed work.
  • Experience doing highly physical work.
WORKING CONDITIONS While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is required to:
  • (CONTINUOUS) seeing, talking, walking, hearing, standing, bending, grasping, reaching, handling and manual dexterity.
  • (FREQUENT) sitting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, twisting, squatting, keyboarding and repetitive motion of hands/wrists.
  • (OCCASIONAL) climbing, crawling, and balancing.
  • Must be able to sort, unpack, lift, and maneuver up to 30 pounds regularly and occasionally more than 30 pounds.
  • Regularly requires the ability to push, pull and maneuver a loaded book cart (20 pounds of push/pull force) on a frequent basis over an extended period.
